Woke up to 3" white stuff, boo-yah! It tapered off by early morning, and roads promptly plowed and clear. Actually a bit warm out there at 40ish.

No entries in the old blog lately. It's been a slow news time around the shores. I've had alot of needy rescue dogs, and they've kept me busy. Bolt was adopted to a correctional officer in Susanville, and will be a regular ranchhand to a mule, a horse, a herd of goats and 2 doggie siblings. I think he'll be ecstatic.

We still have Sr. Citizen Mercury, a sweet 7 yr old Foxy Rat Terrier, Freddie Mac, a 2ish pure Doxie, just a GREAT dog, and Faith, a young pup who was thrown away like trash on hwy 20 a week ago. Her story, along with her 2 sisters, Hope and Angel will be in the Union hopefully tomorrow. If you have a few extra $$ and want to help Sammies Friends pay their huge vet bill (they were in the last stages of starvation) any amount big or small is appreciated.

By now you've received your voter info pamphlet on the special election ballot for the Fire Protection and Emergency Medical Response Service Measure Special Tax. An increase of $52 annually will assure that existing stations stay open, rapid emergency response times are preserved, and current wildland fire protection is maintained. Both lives and properties will continue to be adequately protected. Listen folks, we live plumb in the middle of THE MOST VULNERABLE AREA IN ALL OF NEVADA COUNTY. We have not had a tax increase that goes directly to fire protection in years. This amounts to what, $4 per month. Isn't this a no brainer? No one likes increased prop taxes, but we have to keep at least what we have in terms of services. Please fill our your ballot. Remember in the 60's when they said if you don't like cops, next time you need help, call a hippie? Well if you can't part with $4 a month, next time you have a fire threatening your home, call . . . . . . ??????????

Don't know if you read the papers, but thanks to many wonderful activists here in Nevada County the South Yuba State Park as been removed from the closure list. Bridgeport and the Buttermilk trail live, and some of the greatest swimming holes on the Yuba will be accessable!

One of my favorite stories, "Harold and Maude" will be a play at the Nevada Theatre beginning March 3rd. If you don't know the story, it's about a very quirky and rather dark thinking young man searching for his place in life, and he meet up with and falls in love with an elderly free spirit (they both like to go to funerals of people they don't know). They have a joyous and meaningful relationship. It's just a great story. Can't wait.

Jake the Chi went to his new home 2 weeks ago, go Jake. One of those perfect matches, and his mom Sue has called 3 times to tell us how wonderful and smart and fun Jake is . . . of course we knew this.

So, now we're looking for the right person for Mercury, a Ratty Fox. Merc is an elegant, sweet funny Fox Terrier/Rat Terrier mix. He is tall, weights about 12 lbs, and is just very regal. He would do well in a mature home, keeping company with adults (he's ok with kids, just not a kid dog). He likes his crate, and loves to join you on the sofa, and likes short or long walks. He has a low deep bark that sounds more like a goose, but is not a "barker." Only sounds the alarm when someone is at the door. He will qualify under Scooters "senior for senior" program where you get a reduced adoption rate. He is probably somewhere around 8 years old, and has a healthy long life ahead. BOLT (see picture above )is a young (1 year old) french bull dog/rat terrier mix. He's full of life and mischief, and will keep you busy. He is not destructive, and knows he is only to play with his toys, thought he finds shoelaces irresistible. He would do great with a young family who wants a playful sweet young dog. He gets along with everyone and everything, and is very friendly from the git-go. Bolt weights about 15 pounds, so he'll fit into any home!

Finally, a burn day and rain on the way!

Hi all,

Yesterday and today were burn days, FINALLY. I guess that's cause the percipitation (rain) we've all been waiting for is on the way, today through next week. Temps predicted in the low 30's, so it would seem we'll see the white stuff. Looks like everyone around here is ready, with wood covered and piles of fall out burning. Let's get this party started!

So, my new notebook has a real trigger finger. The other day I was having two email conversations, one with my Atlanta cousin who sadly informed me her sister-in-law "woke up dead" to the surprise of all. Since they are Jewish, they were "sitting Shiva" with her brother, which is the Jewish custom of staying at his side for 5 days to show support.

The second conversation was with a fellow dog rescuer who was telling me about the cute French bulldog/terrier mix just rescued from a shelter. So, thinking I was chatting with the rescue person I emailed back, "SOUNDS CUTE. SEND PICS." Unfortunately I sent it to Atlanta cousin. Oh dear. She replied "WHAT??????????" I better be a little more careful . . . .

So, it's now Saturday and no snow. Boo-hoo. Missing the white stuff.

Meet Mercury and Jake

Having 4 dogs in the house right now (my 2, plus 2 fosters) a neighborhood leash walk just doesn't tire them out enough. So, we've been driving the EXACTLY one mile from the store down Pasquale to the NID gate, and taking that road (ignore the no trespassing signs, they just don't want vehicles to take the road). See the small parking lot on your right. It's a great hike that takes you alongside the lake, over the dam spillway, and into the (empty at this time of year) campground on the other side of lake. The dogs just love it, and they are guaranteed to sleep the rest of the day after that 2-3 mile round trip. The lake is magnificent as usual, calm and cold, and clear as glass. The mirroring of the trees is so scenic and photogenic. I marvel at the beauty here each and every time.

Don't know if you've been following the Penn State sex scandal starring Coach Jerry Sandusky, but just heard on TV that they have located some of the child victims as they were named by Sandusky himself in his autobiography "Touched." Ewwww Jerry, really, "Touched." How'd ya come up with that title?

On a better note, did you catch the Bronco/Steelers game yesterday? What a finish. Tebow put em' away in a quick overtime ending with an 80 yard pass on the first snap and touchdown. Exciting. I'm no big regular season fan, but I do like the playoffs. Usually so much better than SuperBowl games. That was a great one. Can't wait for Bronco vs Patriots. Tebow's favorite passage from the bible is John, 316. Threw for 316 yards. Just a little Tebow factoid. He thanked his Savior Jesus first, and his defense 2nd. Might want to reverse that before the next game . . . .

I can't wrap my mind around the fact that I am gardening and doing yard work this time of year. No rain in the forecast for another 10 days. Unbelievable. Plus the lake isn't that low. Last years supercharge must have left us with a pretty good reserve in the upper dams.

The little house around the corner from me (I mean little, 650 sq ft) sold for $87K. It has a 1/2 acre I think, and a very nice 2 car garage. You can always add on. Someone got a great deal on that one. That's more than the empty lot would have cost you a few years ago. I think that's the lowest price I've seen yet around here.

So, if you know anyone dog shopping, I have a couple of great little fosters. Jake is a 10 lb Chihuahua mix,2 years young, rough and tough, loves everyone and everything. He Zumba dances, does lots of cute yoga stretches all day, and play's tug a war and chases balls. Likes the kitties, and minds very well. He would do well in a busy young family with other pets, or as a shop greeter dog. He's so beautiful. Looks like a baby harp seal.

Mercury is a Rat Terrier/Fox Terrier mix. About 13 lbs, and 8 years young. He's sweet and fun, and loves to run and play, and very affectionate. This is a great example of a great breed. Read up on em. He would do well in a mature household, though he was wonderful yesterday with 2 10 year old girls that played with him.

Please spread the word. Both are Scooters pals dogs and you can read about them and others on Scooterspals.org website. Both were rescued with EUTHANIZE written on their report card, due to overcrowding at Sacramento shelter. It's just a crime that these wonderful animals were scheduled to die because their owners could not live up to a lifetime commitment. When you adopt an animal you take a moral oath to do right by them, and if circumstances change and you absolutely can't keep them, FIND THEM A HOME. Dumping them at a shelter that kills 20-40 dogs every Friday is just not acceptable. Please, if you know of someone about to "dump" a dog or cat, call me. We'll make other arrangements.

Like BBQ? Smiley's has just opened in the Old Briarpatch space on Joersche Drive in Grass Valley (off Nevada City/Grass Valley highway). I'm hearing good things. Will check it out this week. There have never been enough good BBQ joints around here . . hope this pans out.

A few blogs ago I wrote about a pitty named Spot that was lost from his owner Stephan who lives on Pasquale. Spot turned up in someones yard about a mile from where he was lost. Met him at the polar bear plunge at the boat ramp. He's a darling boy. So glad he was reunited with Stephan. They looked very happy to be back together.

Hi friends and shoreites! Well, isn't is amazing that last year we were digging out of many feet of the white stuff, and this year everyone is biking, hiking and still wearing their shorts? A balmy 50 yesterday. You just never know what nature has in mind in these parts. I love the snow, but I'm sure diggin' this weather.

2011 ended weird around here. My laptop got a terrible Russian malware (so my tech head tells me) and has been disabled since mid Dec, forcing me to resort to a 6 year old desk top that changes pages at the speed of evolution. If you are driving by and see it sailing through the window, just duck and keep walking.
Yesterday our neighbor knocked on the door and asked if we knew tht 5' flames were shooting out of the chimney. Can't say that we did. So, our first "flue fire" and a grand visit by NCFD. All is well, though I am kicking myself for not having the chimney cleaned in 2 years (new pipe just installed 2 years ago) despite Hubert at A1 Stove calling me NUMEROUS times last summer saying "it's time." So now we have to replace the holey pipe, which is probably 5X a cleaning cost. Don't be dumb like me, have yours cleaned!
We had lots of family for Christmas, 7 adults and baby's first Christmas. My great niece Olive Wynne Johnson (1 year) helped decorate the tree and I forgot how a child improves Christmas by about 100%. We also had 9 dogs in the house for 5 days. We are a big animal loving family, and though that would horrify most people, I think we manage quite well, and it just magnifies the love by 9 times.
Speaking of, we have two new delightful foster dogs. Jake N Bake, the 2 year old Chihuahua has a great fun personality, is housebroken, and loves all people, dogs and kids. He thinks chasing the kitty is fun, but can be talked out of it. Jake was rescued from a Sacramento shelter by Scooters Pals with hours to live. No crimes, just overcrowding. He's very tall for a chi, and very beautiful, is mostly white with a buff colored back. I post pics when I get my good computer back in service.
Peanut is a smooth coat black and tan cute-as-a-bug mini doxie, 5 years, 10 lbs, and sweet and loving, also housebroken. His elder mommy died a few months ago, and family could not take him on, so brought him to Sammies friends. All there know I'm a sucker for the doxies, so he promptly came home with me. He's a little treasure if you know anyone looking for a weiner dog. He loves your lap or his crate, and is starting to roughhouse with the chi's.
Polar Bear club meets at Scott's Flat today at 2pm for their annual winter plunge. Very fun and funny.
Thanks to the Cascade Shores Womens Club for all the fundraisers and events they hosted this year. They do a bang up job with the kids parties, but that's not all. When member Karen Lari was diagnosed with cancer this year, they rallied to provide her with food, company, wood and housecleaning, not to mention a sympathtic ear and lots of support and love. It is so wonderful to live in a community where that kind of empathy and affection exists. Thank you ladies for all that you do for Cascade Shores and it's residents.
Thanks also to the CSHA board. I know that your efforts are sometimes invisible, but having been a board member, I also know that you are important and vital to the community. When I hve more time I'd like to go into all the bases that you all cover in a year.
So, I'm off to walk the pack of 4, Jenna Babe, KT, Peanut and Jake N Bake. Wave if you see he trying to manage the mob (we do get tangled) and please have a wonderful 2012. GET THAT CHIMNEY CLEANED!

Looking for Spot

A neighbor called the shelter Friday trying to find his little white pitty. Spot was staying with a friend while Stephan was having surgery. Unfortunately, spot bolted, somewhere around the peardale area. The dog is familiar with Greenhorn Creek, so Stephan is hoping Spot is trying to make his way home. He is sweet and shy, mostly white with a black spot on his behind. If you see him, please grab him and call Stephan at 559-7764.

If you are a homeowner in Cascade Shores you may want to read the front page article in the Union Sat. 12/5 titled: "Victims or culprits? Colfax hurt by regulation or irresponsible stewards.?" The gist is that Congressman Tom McCLintock has introduced HR3544 designed to create a litany of protections for local municipalities subject to litigation. This has to do with all of the small communities (like Cascade Shores and Colfax) that are subjected to the same rigid standards as large communities, like San Francisco, resulting from the Clear Water act of 1972, now impacting the cost of sewer treatment plants upgrades. Obviously these costs have a lesser impact per household on huge communities than the 83 homes sharing the cost in a development like ours (the other 320 homes here are on septic). Currently, the "sewer homes" here are paying an average of $2400 per year for the treatment plant. In the Bay Area, the portion part of your tax bill would be about $420. That amounts to about $3 per flush here. Yeah. Judy and Al Kildow up on Summit Ridge have been real activists over the last year hoping to get more attention to this dilemma, and Supv. Nate Beason is always fighting the great fight for this cause. I was relieved to see Nate will once again be running for Dist. 1 supv as he has been a real advocate for the issues we have here in Cascade Shores. Beason in 2012!

Unplugged , and loving it

Hi all. Just returned from 8 days on the road. Took the motor home, Phil and 3 dogs all the way to Medford, Oregon. Drove our latest foster dog, Georgie to his new family. They are from Boring Oregon (yes, there is a Boring, Or) and met them in Eugene for the handoff. Georgie is surely in good hands with 2 special ed teachers (he's a bit of a special needs dog, and bless them for taking him on). Also spent some days with friends in Redding, running amok on their little ranch, with a beautiful view of majestic Mt. Shasta. The great thing about the time away was that I was totally unplugged! Only check email a few short times, kept the cell phone mostly off, and only watched a few TV shows (mostly Big Bang Theory, my latest must see.). No news other than the occasional newspaper headline caught while grabbing a java somewhere. It was heaven.
Returned yesterday, just in time for the big wind here. Holy Moley, that was a good one. If the wood Gods were generous to us last November, the kindling Gods were doing overtime this November. Enough kindling fell out of our trees for the whole year just last night. The next few days will be windy, but not like last night. That was a big unnerving, listening to fallout bouncing off the roof all night. No damage found, hope the first rainstorm doesn't turn up something.
How did you do? Any damage to your home or neighbors?
So, earlier snows, droughts, more class 5 hurricanes, monster windstorms. Damn you Al Gore!

Arriving at Sammies Friends Shelter today,

one of the staff told me about the two dogs that were recently rescued from the side of the road. Seems a man was driving down the road, and saw a pillowcase. As he got closer, he saw the pillowcase move. Pulled over, looked inside and found two of the most darling little white dogs I think I have ever seen. They are now at the shelter, available for adoption. These sweet little dogs are some kind of mix, young, probably about a year old, and small. When I entered their pen, they jumped up to greet me, and smothered me in sweet little doggie kisses. They also have a pure Yorkie roommate looking for a home. I went and got them a couple of fluffy beds, and some toys (they were toyless!). As soon as I returned with those items, they jumped for joy, quickly tested the bed (together) and then threw the toys in air, and delighted that they made squeaky noises. I swear, they are the most joyous little dogs I have ever seen! Know anyone wanting a bundle of joy, to make the season complete? As to the person who tied them in a bag and threw them away like garbage, possibly getting squished by a passing car, starving or freezing on the side of the road, what can I say. What in God's name would make ANYONE do such a thing? Spread the word so these babies can be in loving hands by Thanksgiving.

Pulling up my facebook today (yes, I'm a "Facie") the first thing I see is our councilperson, Renette Senum asking growers to "hire local trimmers" instead of importing out of town pro's. Ha. She is also asking the imports and their dogs to not be litterbugs in town. You have to love that girl. 37 people immediately threw in their 2cents. Yeah growers, what's up with ordering out of town labor? What are you, the Mafia? (reminded me that Tony Soprano always ordered hit men from the outside. Harder to link to him)

Can you afford to date?

So, awhile ago I read a SF Chronicle article about how expensive it is to date in San Francisco. The author estimated that a date including driving, parking, eating and entertainment would run you about $203. Whew, that would be tough. So, Phil and I took the challenge to see what a Nevada County date would actually cost. Here's what we found:
Round trip to town, gas = 1.75
Parking 0
Dinner at Mateo's Public/tax/tip 42.00 (Phil had a great burger platter and a drink, I had the Kobe Beef sliders with salad and 2 glasses of wine, Yum)
A walk up/down Broad St. 0 (looking for entertainment)
Crepe and coffee for 2 at Classic Cafe 12.00 (tax and tip included)
3 piece Gypsy Band and tango dancers 0 at Classic Cafe (every Friday night!)
sub total $55.75
we planned to go to a movie also, but enjoyed the music so much we opted to stay. If we had gone to movie, that would have cost another $15.00, totaling $70.75, or roughly 35% of the San Fran date. SWEEEEEET.

One thing I learned from Rachel Ray's "eating on $40 a day" is that when trying to economize, never order dessert at the restaurant. Not only are they usually $6-$8, but there's 20% on top for tax/tip, or the total for 2 people approx $20. Her suggestion is take a walk (walk off some of those dinner calories) and find a gelato or frozen yogurt shop, or small bakery. We recently discovered Treats in NC after a dinner out. It's a darling little Gelato/Ice Cream/Dessert shop in the alley next to Ike's French Quarter Cafe. The owner, Peggy Wright is the sweetest (oh, get it) person who happily serves you a wonderful array of Gelato's or a homemade dessert crepe. I had the Rose flavored Gelato, and it was heavenly. Phil opted for the Blue Moon coffee, and it was amazing. The total was $6, and the tiny little shop is so cute and fun to hang in. Try it! They are open in the evenings.

Scooter's Pals Dog Rescue here is so dedicated to getting their Pitty and Pitty mixes a home before Christmas that they are willing to waive the adoption fee of $200 for the month of Nov/Dec. Founder Susan Wallace would really love to get the dogs out of boarding/foster homes and into their forever homes for the Holidays. These wonderful dogs have been neutered/spayed, all shots, microchipped (I almost said microwaved) and are on heartworm. They are most deserving of a real family of their own. So if you or someone you know has been thinking of adopting, please contact them at 350-2099 or check their pictures gallery at scooterspals.org. Scooters exists only through personal donations, and rescues dogs right off death row. They put lots of $$$ into each dog in order to save, transport, board and vet them while awaiting an adopter. I received a letter advising of a timber plan nearby a few months ago, but wasn't sure where. Well, it's begun, and it's only 3 lots above me. You have probably noticed all the vehicles on the steep part of the Big Hill. I'm hearing chain saws, large truck and big ass trees falling all day long. I'll have to hike up and see what info I can glean. I guess it will make a nice firebreak for us, but looks like their making a holy mess and clearcutting. Ugh.

Pre-Foreclosure on Mt. View

Soooo surprized to see that Realtor Bill Levitz has "left the building." His home at 15722 Mt. View is empty, and I just got a email notice it is in preforeclosure as an active short sale from Gold Country Real Estate. It's a large home, and one of the few with a built in pool here in the shores. The listing price was $399, but looks like the bank is now asking $245K. Home needs lots of updating, but it's a good lot with alot to offer. Bring your contractor! Scroll down. Don't know where Bill has moved to, but wishing him the best. He was a big cheerleader for Cascade Shores, and CS real estate. You can see the listing on Zillow.com.

4" and still falling at 7:31, a trend?

Roland Fasset's Nevadacountyweather on Facebook reminds us that last year the 1st snow was on Nov. 20th. Very early, and with leaves still on the trees, caused so many to come crashing down. Well, yesterday, Novembre cinco, we got our first snow. Started at 7pm Sat night, and woke up at 7:30 this am to that soulful silence that tells me we are totally blanketed in the white stuff and it was still coming down. I measured 4" and spent a half hour clearing the porch and part of driveway, and with a 6 ft pole, went around shaking the snow off my still leaf laden trees (not the pines of course, they are bullet proof!) my only company the resident raven, soaring through our woods caaawing the news. Suggest you do the same, or you will have lots of broken branches on your maples and dogwoods. (yes Dixie, I know that's a run on sentence).My maple hasn't even turned colors yet!
So, was last year a fluke, a 10-20 year freak winter, or are we entering a trend? You tell me.
Nonetheless, it is gorgeous out there. The chihuahua meter (my little Kate) says it's below 38. I know, cause she's casing the throw rugs as a possible toilet alternative, which is what she does when I open the door and she catches the chilly breeze and heads back to the dining room to think it over. She's right, it's 34.5 degrees. The rest of the dogs (3 right now) forge ahead and find a patch of ground not yet covered with the white stuff, then happily run around enjoying the crunch under their feet.
The Nevadacitywebcam shows only rain in town. Google it if you need that info. Enjoy your first wintery day, and let's hope it's a "fluke."

On a sad note, I don't know if you read the front page article in the Union on Nov. 1 about Kenneth Gammelgard, 61, a Nevada County resident, being killed by a drunk driver in Kyrgystan.
Mr. Gammelgard is a local educator who retired in 2009. He was visiting his son, daughter in law and grandchild, and was on his way to the airport when the accident occurred. His wife and other family members survived, although with some injuries. His other son, Alex and family live here in the Shores, just a few homes down from me. I often see them walking their kids and dogs, and have friendly conversations with them. I have seen his father many times with hammer or rake in hand helping to improve his sons home.
You can only imagine the expense of getting his father back home for burial, and the medical bills that will result from this tragedy. Really a great Flea Market. Tons of stuff. One of my favorite shops, LaLoo on Broad St. donated boxes and boxes of merchandise. There will be some beautiful home decor stuff, new clothing, pet supplies, games, Christmas decorations. Plus a great bake sale. One stop shopping. The office is across from Weiss Bros. Come on down, you won't be sorry. Not your typical Flea Market, and every single dollar goes to pulling dogs off "death row" and finding them homes.

It's a pitty there's a homeless Pitty everywhere you look

I know, so many people have no interest in adopting a Pit Bull, or Pitty Mix. I have had the same stand . . . . until I started volunteering at Sammies Friends 15 months ago. However, I am better educated now, and better than that, have met some of the sweetest, most loyal examples of that breed through volunteer work. Here is what I have learned over the past 18 months having personally housed 20 homeless dogs.
With the housing implosion, the shelter is drowning in "foreclosure" and stray dogs. So many people losing their status as home owners, and becoming renters, or moving away in seach of jobs. Lord knows it's hard enough to find a rental that takes dogs, and almost IMPOSSIBLE to find one that takes Pitties (sometimes prohibited by the insurance companies). Since the shelter can't take many "owner turn-in's" (they are obligated to take all county strays, & fill up fast with those) the result is that people simply release their dogs on county roads to fend for themselves. This results in injured, dead ,starving and scared dogs. Many are Pitts.
Currently Nevada County shelter has 12 of them, with more rolling in each day. Last month they adopted out ONE. Yes, one pit mix adopted. Do the math. Scooters Pals has 12 on their roster, fortunately in foster homes since they have no facility.
Two programs to address the problem: First and foremost, slow the breeding. Sammies Friends (NC shelter) is offering a SPAY/NEUTER YOUR PIT BULL PROGRAM, November 7th to Nov. 12th. You can get your dog spayed or neutered for low/cost or even NO COST to you. Even transportation will be provided if needed. PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD. Owners will also have a chance to win a the $250 grand prize for participating. The last time they had this program 70 dogs got altered. This is so important to stop more dogs from being born that will just land on the streets, dead or in the shelters. Sammies dogs receive training while at the shelter, and they can assist you with continuing training needs. They also have a program for low income owners to help with the altering of other breeds and cats. Call Sammies at 471-5041 for info on these programs.
Scooters Pals will launch a program for NOV/DEC to WAIVE THE ADOPTION FEE to QUALIFIED OWNERS for their Pitt's and Pitt mixes looking for a home (the normal fee is $200). These dogs are spayed/neutered, all shots, all medical needs already addressed and microchipped. This would cost much more to do on your own if you started with a puppy. Plus, because they are in foster care, you get to know much about their personality before you consider them for your family.

SO, maybe you would like to be a hero, and give a wonderful dog a deserving chance. So many of these dogs are model citizens already, and more will be with proper homes and training. Perhaps you can foster one from the shelter so he can be in a home for the holidays, enjoying all the perks of a family atmosphere. Or perhaps you can enlighten your neighbor that there is assistance to help them do the right thing by their dog. "Helping one dog may not change the world, but for that one dog, his world is changed forever."

Had a wonderful time last night at Sharon's house with the Womens Club ladies, at their Pizza and Movie night (Kings Speech). Great crowd. Really fun, with about a hour of visiting, dinner, movie and dessert. I love my lady friends here in the Shores. Everyone is so fun and upbeat, and it's a great way to catch up.

The Women's Club fabulous Children's Halloween Party is the 29th, at 1pm-3pm. Be sure to bring your little princess/fireman/ghost or what ever to the kids party. This year, the Homeowners Assn is adding a "scary movie night" and screening some of the classics at the Firehouse after the kids party, I think at 4PM till 10PM. Sounds like a great night for those of you who love this holiday. That event is at 6pm, so even you working folk can attend.

Glorious glorious rain

Hi there, and welcome to autumn. Ain't it wonderful. Lots of rain, and all the dust is getting settled, the trees are getting a long awaited shower. We all have TONS of firewood stacked, and the house is cozy and fragrant with the smell of a toasty fire. Karen and I stopped in Nevada City tonight and grabbed the window seat at Friar Tucks for a glorious meal of Carrot Ginger soup, fresh greens salad with chunky Bleu Cheese dressing, and a bubbly pot of Swiss Fondue. We savored all the wonderful flavors while watching the rain begin, pedestrians scrambling for the cover of awnings but clearly enjoying the change of weather. We topped the meal off with an Irish coffee, and the delightful conversations with Bob Buhlis and Austin and friends. Bob runs the postal service on Commercial Street, and SWEARS that he is retiring on November 5th, this being his 19th year of owning that business, and his 75th year on planet earth. Hope he makes his goal.

They are also predicting snow at 7000 level, but possibly as low as 5500, and a few inches in Tahoe Basin. And so it begins!

Did you read the Union article about homeowner insurance being hard to secure here in the foothills? I don't know, but I had Farmers for 10 years, no problem (Ed Mertens on Zion St.) In July we switched to Horace Mann cause we bought a rental home in Cascade Shores, and got more coverage for less $$ from that company. They definitely insure here, so, like I said, I don't know how accurate that article was. There most certainly are companies that won't tough the high fire danger area, same as there are some that won't insure in flood plains like Marysville, but still, I think you can always find the ones that do. Have you had any problem? Do tell.

ROAD WORK EVERYWHERE YOU GO!

Wow, everywhere you go they are resurfacing. Looks like Pasquale is done. I have to say, Pasquale is just that much more beautiful with new blacktop, when man and nature collide, in a good way. The sharp black street against the beautiful red soil, framed by the beautiful green forest is breathtaking this time of year. It's so sad that the Madrona forest is sick and fading down the road. You can see the tops browning, and so many seem to be dying or dead. I understand it is a viral disease, and it will be sad to loose any of those gorgeous trees, but I guess the forest is ever changing.
They seem to be wrapping up the project on Idaho Maryland/Banner Lava Cap, and at least for now, you can take that route without delays. Banner Quaker Hill resurfacing is done.
All done in time for this weekends Triathalon. The boat ramp closes today after 1PM I think, and will reopen Sunday afternoon.
Hope to see you at the competition tomorrow (ugh, 7:30 ish) to root for the ladies! I will have foster dog Kit Carson, sweetest guy ever. Also, I brought Mia home from the shelter for the weekend. She is a 9 year old white lab, a 10 on the beauty scale, and just as sweet. Her mom lost her home (crappy recession) and took Mia to the vet to be euthanized, the only reason being she had no where to rehome her. Fortunately the vet refused, and she is now at Sammies Friends shelter awaiting someone to adopt her. Wait till you see her, she's wonderful. If you know anyone who might want a beautiful sweet dog, or even to foster her so she doesn't have to live at the shelter while she awaits adoption, let me know. Sammies Friends provides food, vet care and any meds needed while you foster. Mia just needs a yard and a fluffy dog bed. She's very quiet, but very healthy.

IT'S OMINOUS OUT THERE

Don't know about the rest of Nevada County, but here in the shores a beautiful rose glow appeared about 5:30pm, and at 7:30 the thunderheads moved in, and the sky became heavy with large gray clouds. Just returned from walking the dogs, and lightning strikes could be seen rapidly appearing towards the east, in the high sierra. They are easily heard and seen here, and every dog in the neighborhood is barking. It all feels rather ominous. KEEP THE DOGS SAFE. This is the kind of event that makes them run, and the shelter get's full of strays that were only trying to escape the fear of the noise.

Speaking of, I still have the cutest, most loving and fun foster dog, Kit Carson. He's a beagle mix, and a beautiful blond color. Loves water, air blowers, walks, chasing tennis balls, anything that squeaks, and cuddling. Likes every person and every dog, and has learned to live with cats. He's about 3 years old,weighs about 20 lbs, and best of all, not a barker. However, he is a great guard dog, and won't let anyone in my gate without my permission. Don't know if the county is still doing it for free, so you will have to contact them, or contact Michael Cotton or Brian Bixler down here, or for that matter any tree trimmer/chipper you may know. Went to the duck races yesterday. That really is a fun event. I guess my duck didn't win, however the lucky winner received $5000. This is put on by NC Rotary, a great organization. Our own Caroline Inglis is the new President elect of the Nevada City chapter. She's a hard working clever lady, and was our CSHA secretary for years, and a great friend (even though we haven't talked for weeks Caroline, what they hey?).

Went to Lost Mine Lake 4pm ish yesterday. No one there but me and Baby Kate (my Chi). We hopped on my floatee and circled the island for an hour. Just us and all the wonderful wildlife. Fish swimming by, all the beautiful birds on the back side of island, frogs jumping into the water making a splash. The water is warm in one spot, nice and cold in the next. What a treasure that pond is.
Pam Herrenkohl has been in charge of LML for the past 2 years. What a wonderful job she has done keeping it mowed, clean and orderly. She has managed all the rentals for weddings, birthday parties, reunions. She does it all with a smile, and it is in very capable hands. I know you read this, so thank you Pam for continuing the wonderful 40 year tradition of Lost Mine Lake. Job well done! You and your team are remarkable.

Our new foster dog is here. Carson is a young Beagle mix. Pure blond, funny and sweet, loves to love, and plays ball like a major leaguer. Just got home from 3 days in Gray Area, and my house is almost finished. Herve and Jeremy and Tony are unbelievable! It looks amazing. My neighbors all said it looks like the builders just drove away, as in the paint job makes it look like a brand new house! Also Herve said that after I wrote about them, another neighbor came by to see and hired them to paint their house too! Good stuff. If you are interested in getting a bid on work you need done, you can reach Herve at 264-7094. They also do general contracting and foundation work.
Also, the guys went fishing at Jackson Meadows and brought me a 6 lb German Brown Trout that we'll be BBQ'ing tomorrow for lunch. Did your painters do that for you??????

12942 Spanish Lane. This is a short sell (patience) but is listed at $179K now. This is a great 3/2 that shows very well. Clean and pretty, with a nice bedroom/bath that were added a few years ago. What a nice house, and Spanish Lane is a really nice street. So many great homes for sale in the shores right now, though many do seem to be finding new owners. I think this housing debacle may have a silver lining. All the homes that were not well kept seem to have "turned over" and have new owners that are bringing them up to their potential. Lots are being cleared, helping with our fire safety. In the end, we may have a more consistent look, and lots of interesting new neighbors. As they say, the only thing you can count on is CHANGE. The times they are a changin'.

Isn't the weather just perfect? Went and floated on the lake yesterday, and it could not have been nicer. From 2-4pm not a single motor boat on the lake. Just me, a floatie, little Kate the Chi-Chi and a whole lotta sunshine. Paradise. On the way out I realized the shrubs were holding a bounty of wild raspberries. Yum. It's still blackberry season too. The vege stands are carrying the heirlook tomato's now too. Joy.

If you're nice, I'll give you the super simple recipe for the Choc. espresso's, which are AWESOME if I do say so myself. The Green Tea cookies are my own invention, so I'd obviously have to kill you if you got the recipe. Anyway, please come to support Scooters continuing effort to rescue wonderful deserving dogs from high kill shelters (meaning that every week, approximately 70% of their dogs and cats die cause no one showed up to adopt them). You can pick up some great items, baked goods or grab a lunch snack. Also, if you want to donate books, they sell them on ebay. So easy to help our furry friends. You can also find out how to become a foster parent to some sweet little baby, if you have been considering. Scooters pay's the vet, food and meds on such animals. You just give them a loving "soft place to fall" while they await their forever home. Thanks to all the wonderful staff and volunteers at our shelter, Sammies Friends, the euthanasia rate is under 1%. What an awesome team.

Very Scary Dog Attack on BQH Hill

Just got news that last night 2 loose pit bull's jumped into a fenced yard on BQH by the store and attacked the resident Aussie Shepherd. A very brave neighbor heard the commotion and ran over to break it up. One of the Pitty's left, but the other challenged him and stayed in the yard. I don't have a description of the Pitty's other than white with substantial collars on. DO YOU KNOW WHERE THEY BELONG? If so, please let me know and I will pass info on to the doggie victims family and Animal Control. This business of letting dogs roam around here with so many kids and cars and other FENCED IN dogs is crazy.

Where has the time gone???

First, I want to thank you wonderful people I have run into lately that have thanked me for my blog, thereby reminding me that I have not blogged (verb?) for awhile. Much has happened around here at Casa de Perros. First, my majorly cute foster dog OSCAR got adopted by a lovely couple in Carson City, Nevada. Bless you Oscar, you stole my heart! We drove him to them yesterday, a long beautiful tearful ride around Lake Tahoe, and on the way there and back saw so many amazing hot rods and classic cars, then realized it was Hot August Nights in Reno. So had to stop and have dinner and peruse town. If you love cars even a little, or want to relive your childhood you have to go the HAN in Reno. The people watching is spectacular too! Oh buy back to OSCAR, who will be living on the high desert with an 8 year old Rottweiler sister, chickens, and Wild horses, as his 1 1/3 acres borders BLM land. We saw 2 herds right outside his fence, and he was not even impressed. I was. They were beautiful healthy looking horses. Lucky Oscar.

Around the shores, could the weather be more perfect? I think not! In the low 80's and dry and just yummy . Enjoy. The big lake is officially bath water temp, and everyone is smiling and it seems last winter's hardship are forgotten. Well, except we are all still cleaning up trees. I ran into Michael Cotton (Michaels Tree Service) and he has a very big smile on his face. He said he see's it taking probably 2 years to clean up the storm of 2011. Then I saw Brian Bixler (Bixler's Tree Service) and he's pretty happy with the amount of work available here in the shores too. So if you're dragging your heels, better line these guys up if you want work done this year. Shop local! Their phone numbers are on the service provider list.

Don't know if you've noticed, but the pot hole on my corner (Banner Quaker and Pasquale) is graduating from a pot hole to a swimming hole. We call it Lake Pasquale, or Pasquale Ice Rink in winter. Anyway, I saw that they are resurfacing Pasquale from the Red Dog end, so I emailed Nate Beason, Supv. of Dist 1, (love that man) and asked him to see if he could get the guys to come down and repair that hole before some poor person in a little car disappears into it! Within 24 hours he answered me back and got Doug Farrel of roads dept to commit to fixing "soon". We'll see how that goes. Nate is pretty good at getting things done.

This is the time of year you can usually get a pretty good seat for the annual meteor shower, though I think the waning moon (is it waxing or waning, I forget) may cause less than perfect viewing. We often go down to the boat ramp with pillows and lay down and watch the show. James Mayer (thanks James) sent me a link for when you can view the Space Station in the sky, but I'm too lame to read it properly. However it is so I think if you google Satellite Sighting/Grass Valley you can view it (i'm also to lame to transfer the Nasa link).

In case you're a newby, and you'd like to join a walking group, just want to let you know that if you are are the Firehouse on Monday, Wed and Friday, 8 AM SHARP, there is a group that walks 1 1/2 miles out Pasquale and back, (yes, that's a total of 3 miles) and dogs are welcome, on or off leash. They keep a pretty good pace, and you will be back at the firehouse by 9am, and you're dog will sleep till 12! The faces change, but there usually is someone there.

September 10th is the annual community yard sale at the Firehouse. Great event. Bring your treasures to sell, or bring you mad money and buy. Lots of fun, and burgers/chips/drinks for lunch. This is you chance to purge your life of those useful but no longer needed items, or but a great recycled item and help save the planet. It only works if you work it!
September 18th is the Barbara Schmidt Millar triathalon at Scotts Flat. You are probably noticing the athletes jogging and biking around here right now. Give them a wide berth on Pasquale. This is a great event that raises money the free cancer screenings at Sierra Nevada Hosp. and raises awareness. A dear friend here in the Shores has recently been diagnoses with breast cancer, reminding me that 1 in 8 women will experience it in their life. So, please support this event, and be sure to give these wonderful athletes the respect they deserve.

The boardwalk sidewalks are getting a start on Commercial Street by the sustainable committee. That will be really nice. They are installing benches and flower boxes too. Nice. Lost Mine Lake is reserved all day Sat. for a wedding. That really is a great place for a wedding or family reunion or birthday party. You get it dawn till dusk for $75 is you're a member, $100 non-member. What a deal. You can order a portable sink/hand wash station to park by bathrooms, and there is power, refrigerator, lights, picnic tables with umbrellas, 6' portable tables, BBQ, horseshoes, volleyball and children's playground, not to mention a 5 acre lake. Just call Pam Herenkohl (on contact list cascadeshores.org) to reserve. If it's not rented for the day, you can also "take your chances" and use it, but you won't have it exclusively and you won't have access to the refrigerator and umbrella's, or maybe the BBQ racks. BUT everything else is always there!

In chatting with some of my new "weekender" neighbors, they reminded me of a dilemma I had back in 99' when I was only visiting my house on weekends and holidays. It is so hard to stop having fun early Sunday so you can clean house before you leave! Then you get to go back to your real life, and clean house again~
So just wanted to clue you in that Sharon Hess who lives here on Nugget St. is a great housekeeper, and she uses all natural hypo-allergenic solutions, and does a fantastic job. If you are interested in her services, you can find her on our service provider list.

Trying to reduce your plastic use? I just discovered a great new website "myplasticfreelife.com" which is full of clever ideas for reducing your consumption, or recycling the stuff that shows up in your life no matter how hard you try to avoid. Now that the farmer's markets are in full swing, how about having a permanent shopping bag by the door, and put your empty berry baskets, egg cartons etc in there. The farmers are happy to take them back (cuts their costs) and you can use them to measure while you are then, then leave them behind. Also put some paper lunch bags in your "market kit" if you don't want to use the plastic that they offer. See the site for more great ideas.
I have been mindlessly using plastic to rid myself of the kitty litter stuff, but have switched to brown lunch bags (ooohh, don't let it get mixed up with real lunch, ugh).

3 new and wonderful reasons to visit Nevada City

First, the Crazy Horse Saloon on Commercial St. has reopened (same owners) as a Frozen Yogurt parlor, with a grocery selection. Going there tomorrow. Heard it's pretty cool, and pretty cool.
Second, Pete's Pizza in Grass Valley has opened a parlor in NC, and you can buy by the slice, which is ABOUT TIME. Why should you have to commit to a whole pizza when a slice will do? Third, a new wine tasting room, (not sure what st) which makes it 5 tasting rooms. How fun is it to hop from wine shop to wine shop, then make a return trip to pic up your fav's. Loving it. Indian Springs Winery on Broad/Pine always has fun evening events too, if you have not checked that out.

So many beautiful homes in our neighborhood for sale right now. Just came back from an open house at Toni's on corner of Nugget/Pasquale, around the corner from here, a really lovely serene 3 bedroom/2 bath house. Her husband Bill, (RIP) was more than a nice guy. He was a great woodwooker. The house has so many beautiful custom touches. The master bathroom just makes you want to jump in with it's hardwood surround tub. The kitchen screams "throw a party and invite everyone you know." The covered deck off the living room is perfect for snuggling and watching the snow fall (or the leaves) and has a trap door that takes you down to garage, plus an inside route to garage. All new paint, with a 2 car attached garage and shed. Too many custom touches to name. And she is asking $265K. Are you kidding???? 15515 Nugget. Check it out.

The Union had a story about a group of people who had planted vintage roses at the cemetery on Red Dog (the one on the right coming up Red Dog towards Quaker Hill). I did a little detour through it today and was amazed at the huge collection of blooming plants that are now thriving there. It has a transformed that gray, drab, but totally interesting historical graveyard into a Renoir painting! If you like graveyards (I admit, I do) you must stop and "smell the roses." Whoever you are, you guys did a great job of cheering up a boneyard. Many Nevada City founding fathers/mothers buried there. So interesting to live in the midst of such California History. I'll take pics to share next time. Wish the Union would do follow up stories on that sort of thing with pics. Some good news would be nice once in a while.

Just saw a fire truck pass the house with siren/light going. Not sure their mission (fire or emt) but reminder: BURN SEASON IS OVER! No more burning your slash and yard waste till the rainy season (November?). Please observe. The fine for violation is hefty, but the risk of lighting Cascade Shores like a roman candle is horrifying. Please be fire safe, and keep doing the great work of cleaning up the downed stuff on your property. The county chipper is still making the rounds, so place your branches on the edge of your property at the road, with the stems facing out so they can grab and chip. Do not stack higher than 4'. I imagine they will be chipping throughout the summer. If I hear different, I'll let you know. Chippers can be rented at Green and Gold, or you can hire local tree people (Michael Cotton or Brian Bixler). Check out service provider list on Cascadeshores.org for their contact info.

Pam Herrenkohl who manages Lost Mine Lake would like to remind everyone that the summer rules are in effect, NO DOGS ON LAWN AREA of Lost Mine Lake. I love dogs as much as anyone, but toddlers and dogs in a swimming/barefoot area do not mix well. There is a great doggie beach area on the path right of the bathrooms, so take Fido there for a swim or trek around the lake, but please do not bring him to picnic area. I know, we all get accustomed to letting the dogs hang out during the winter months, but please respect the summer rules. Also, please clean up after your dog when on the path. We'll place plastic bags by the gate in case you forget them. This is pretty much the only rule at LML, so it is much appreciated if it is observed. It is for the safety and comfort of all.

I watched a beautiful Robin make a nest right over my kitchen door, and she raised one chick, who left about a week ago. Then I noticed her sitting in the nest again, and when I checked there is another single blue egg. Is this common? I did not know they had singles, or that they reused the nest. Anyway, it makes me happy that she feels safe even though Phil and I and dogs are cats enter and exit thru that door all day long! I also just restocked the bird feeders for the first time this year, and it's an all day buffet around here. Love the huge assortment of birds in the Shores. So fun to watch. Anna across the street feeds her hummers all year. She must have 3 different types/colors visiting her house. They zoom right over my head when I come to her door.
I take pine cones, lather some peanut butter in between the layers, put it a plastic bag with bird seed and give a good shake to get it all coated with seed. Then hang it from a tree with a piece of wire. The squirrels go CRAZY for it. They hang upside down off the pine cone enjoying the treat. Must be the equivalent of me with a piece of cheesecake in the enjoyment level!

I admit it, I'm all absorbed in the Casey Anthony trial. Sick, I know. I'm betting on a less than 1st degree verdict from the jury. That buffoon of an attorney, Jose Baez actually did create a bit of doubt whether it was an accident or homicide, but can we agree that this child had to have died from severe neglect at least . . . . certainly one of the most bizarre trials since O.J. I was addicted to that one too.

Get "Tangled" with your neighbors

Friday, July 1st at 8:30 is the first of the Firehouse Movie Series put on by the Cascade Shores Womens Club. So bring your most comfy chair, a nice blankey, and don't forget the kids. The movie is shown outside in the parking lot, and it's FREE. So fun! "Tangled" is a wonderful animated Disney film based on the story "Repunzel" by the Brothers Grimm, featuring the voices of Mandy Moore, Zachary Levi and Donna Murphy. At a reported $260 MIL, it's the most expensive film every produced by Disney. The CSHA is providing the popcorn and drinks, all you have to do is show up at dark o'clock. The Americorp kids are still camping in the Firehouse, so there may be a crowd, but this gives you a chance to thank them for their commitment to making us firesafe here. Hope to see you there.

To the person who wrote to me that they can't walk their dogs without fear of them being harassed by other dogs here in the shores, please write to me at caindenises@gmail.com. I'd like to discuss this. Perhaps I can give you some tips on a safe route. I walk my dogs alot, and without incidence. There are some streets I avoid as a few charging dogs scare me a bit too. It's unfortunate that owners don't understand how intimidating it is to be charged by and unknown dog, regardless of how "friendly" they think their dog is . . . .

Lazy Bear steals "easy" fish

Pam Herrenkohl reported on her facebook that her son and husband went fishing in Scotts Flat Lake here and caught a 8lb er. Now that's impressive enough, but while they were in the house celebrating with 2am burritos, our friendly neighborhood bear climbed into the boat and tried to make off with the fish. BUSTED! Too funny. Not sure how they talked the bear out of it, of even if they did. After all, she had triplets to feed. Karen Lari got a picture of the trips climbing the tree by her house, they are sooooo cute.

A couple of years ago the paper had an article about a guy in Tahoe that put a pizza in his Mustang convertible, ran into a store, and you guessed it, came out to find a full grown bear in the back seat eating the pizza. WHAT TO DO????

A neighbor called to report that a large white female Shepard mix dog has taken up residence in her yard on Banner Quaker Hill by Gas Canyon. No collar or ID, and no one seems to know who her family is. So, she will be delivered to Sammies Friends shelter on Mc Cortney tomorrow. If you know where she belongs, please clue them in. They said she is sweet and friendly.

SAMMIES FRIENDS ADOPTHATHON SAT 12-4

Come to the shelter on McCortney Sat. 12-4pm for a party, food and a chance to meet all the wonderful shelter animals. Someone placed 7 beautiful black/white Australian Shepard puppies in a dumpster in North San Juan. There has to be a special kind of hell for people like that. Come see them, they are so beautiful, and they still have puppy breath (I so love puppy breath). Lots of beautiful deserving dogs, cats, bunnies, goats and even a Llama are at the shelter looking for their new family. Even if you are not in the market, come see how nice the shelter is, and leave a donation of food or $$$ for the "babies." There will be a raffle also, and a chance to buy tickets to their annual dinner at Lake Wildwood on July 31st.

The Union confirmed that the forestry will be checking lots in Cascade Shores for fire hazard debris piles/downed trees. The fine will be $500 if your lot is not safe. So do yourself a favor and clean up before you get tagged. It's still burn season, WITH A PERMIT.

I hear lots of people are complaining about the black lab owned by the Ferguson's at the corner of Pasquale and Banner Quaker Hill, by the store. Animal control has been contacted regarding the dogs habit of jumping out from the bushes right in front of moving cars, or lounging in the street and blocking traffic. Owner's have been notified and requested to get the dog under control. . . .If you call animal control about "dogs at large" they will come and check it out. There is in fact a leash law here, so any dog roaming is in violation. Sometimes it takes paying a fine to get Fido back to wake up irresponsible owners. The beautiful basset that was wandering around finally went to the shelter, and the owners on Summit Ridge didn't even go to claim her. She got immediately adopted, and is now in her happy new RESPONSIBLE home. Good for her, she was a sweetie.

Forestry gonna be tagging dangerous lots?

Someone (don't remember who) told me last night at LML event that the Dept of Forestry is going to re institute their lot checking for too much flammable debris in Cascade Shores. When I moved here is 2000 they did that. They would give you a report card telling you what had to be done, then returned in a few weeks and you were FINED if the hazard was not corrected. Wonder if it's true. Hope it is, because there sure is a lot of fallout from the November and March storms, and it's gonna be one hell of a fire threat.

Scooterspals dog rescue is having a Grand Opening for their new office on Saturday, 2-6pm. It's on Joersche, next door to the old Briarpatch site, on the corner across from Weiss Bros. Nursery. Drop by and say hello, enjoy the party, and maybe find out if you would like to foster a doggie for them, or make a donation to the cause. They will have wonderful food by Austin, and I think music. They have always run the rescue in their personal homes, so the gift of an office for a year by a Penn Valley couple has been a huge blessing. They'll have classes on fostering, supplies and maybe even a boutique with doggie geared gifts and art. Susan and co. have saved over 700 dogs over the last few years. I've fostered 16 or 17 myself, and is has been the most rewarding thing I've even done. Each and every dog has been such a special little spirit enhancing my life.

If you're really feeling like enjoying the great outdoors, stay for the homeowners pot luck mixer. Last weeks was great with about 25 adults and kids there. This time I'll make it too!

FINALLY, some really summer weather. Actually had to water the flowers today. It's beautiful here and I went down to watch the sunset at the big lake last night. Real dramatic clouds and just a gorgeous sunset. Nothing better than sitting on the boat ramp in the middle of the lake at 8pm for the show.

Met new neighbors on Pasquale last night. Rich and Steve bought Archie and Doris's house. They are from Berkley (my birthplace) and are really enjoying the beauty of Nevada City and the shores. I was telling them if you miss Berkeley, you can always go to Mecca Cafe on Commercial and be treated to funky atmosphere and rude employees, and I mean that in a good way.
You'll feel like nice and comfy like you're back home! (It's a Berkeley thing). In the 70's there was a real funky steak house & bar in Port Costa (a little hamlet under the Vallejo Bridge) called the Wherehouse run by Juanita. She was like a female Don Rickles. People used to come from miles around just to be insulted by Juanita. She passed on last year. Too bad, the woman was a 350 lb national treasure!

If you've been following the saga of Big Sam, worlds largest weiner dog (41 lbs when I got him) we finally have a happy ending. I fostered Sam out of the shelter cause he was reported by his owner turn in as a biter, had a bad case of heart worm, and was 10 lbs overweight, dangerous for a guy with 4" legs., and was overlooked for a month at shelter. We got him heartworm treatment, dieted and walked him down to 36 lbs, and found out Sam would not bite even if you bit him first. A nice woman was all set up to adopt him the Monday, and cancelled on Friday. I was so sorry, cause it seemed like the perfect home. Then I decided to take him to Scooterspals adoptathon at Incredible Pets. Within and hour, I had 3 families lined up begging for Big Sam. A WONDERFUL couple that lives on Red Dog was just enchanted by that big old weiner dog with an even bigger heart, and took him home with them. I insisted on visitation rights, cause I really fell for that sweet sweet soul. Little Kate the Chihuahua actually took Sammie's leash and walked him from our door to the gate for his new parents. Awwww.

BBQ at Lost Mine Lake tonight

The Homeowner's Assn is launching their "BBQ at the Lake" tonight. They are encouraging your to bring your potluck item to the lake and mix it up with your neighbors. The coals will be it for your BBQ item, from 6PM till--????.
Sounds like fun. The park is in beautiful condition, in part thanks to the Americorp volunteers that cleaned it on clean up day, and Pam Herrenkohl's great organization skills.

THIS WEEKEND IS THE GOLD COUNTY SAILING REGATTA AT SCOTTS FLAT, starting 11am Sat, with 3 races, and 2 races on Sunday. Also a BBQ dinner Sat night on Hwy 20 side. Should be beautiful!

As I go on walks, I've been seeing new property owners visiting their new homes. Looks like the trend is people buying 2nd homes as vacation/weekenders, so our full time population is dwindling. That's all right, less traffic on the hill. Unfortunately, it means less money spent in town though, tough on the merchants. So, be sure to shop local! The farmers markets are back in swing, even with the rain. My favorite is North Star House. I can spend hours there. It's on Old Auburn Rd. Take a left at gate #3 by fairgrounds on Mc Courtney. The house was designed by Julia Morgan, you know, the one who designed Hearst Castle. It is slowly and lovingly being restored. Their entertainment for this years concert is Aaron Neville. Awesome!

Falling in love, again

Walking up Lake Lane after a visit to the big lake, I saw Lori and Jerry Sheftel in their yard. Last year they put their home on the market, and set about looking for a new home. "We're done with the Shores, we're done with the snow" they exclaimed. The Sheftel's work hard at their plumbing business, and Jerry said "I think I'll buy one of those trophy homes. I deserve it." So, for the past year they have looked all over Nevada County and all the way to Lincoln. What did they find? Well, Lori told me "we never found anything as beautiful as right here." "Where else can you have a lake view like this, a yard like this, the wildlife like this?" Their home is modest, but they have worked hard to make it perfect for their family.
As spring slowly arrives, you go about the spring chores. Rake up fallen wood and leaves and burn. See what plants made it through the winter. Go to the nursery or drug store and select your favorite bedding plants. Set them around the yard, and feel that sense of accomplishment. Paint the trim that peeled due to the moisture over winter. Clean the bird feeders. Drive down to Scotts Flat to check the level of the lake. Notice all the incredible huge white dogwood blooms, the cherry trees pink against the green forest. Watch the dogs sail across the red dirt, leaping over next year's firewood drying in the sun. Fall in love with Cascade Shores all over again.
THERE IS NO PLACE LIKE HOME. Enjoy your day.

Well, this was one for the books. So gray and rainy one minute, even a bit of falling snow, then sunny and warm the next! I went to big lake on Saturday, and not a single boat. I wonder how many campers cancelled for a staycation at the last second due to rain. Nice and quiet here in the shores.

Went to Tofanelli's today to meet up with Steve and Connie Foxe for lunch. They are former shores residents now residing in New Mexico, and missing California. Had a great time, and a great lunch. The crabcakes over baby greens with mango salsa is the BOMB. Great bloody Mary's too. Downtown GV was deader than a doornail, so we took advantage and did a little shopping. I love GV when it's in lazy mode. Have you checked out the Bamboo shop? The clothing made of bamboo is amazing. . . . soooo soft.

Went wine tasting at one of the tasting rooms on Mill St. and they kindly let me bring my foster dog Sam into the tasting room. He was as usual a perfect gentleman and visited shortly with everyone in the room before plopping down under my stool and taking a snooze. This dog is just the best ever, and if you are looking for a new best friend, you might want to check him out. Unfortunately, his last owner did not give him monthly heartworm meds, so he has to be treated for a heartworm disease. Please, give your dogs the meds. It's not fair to make poor Sammie go through the painful cure when it can so easily be prevented. He'll be ready for a forever home after this treatment in a few weeks. I'm sure he'll take the discomfort with his usual calm.

I always watch the home sales around here, and saw one sell on Quaker Ridge for $1.4 Million. Whew, did not know there was still a home around here worth that. A few Summit Ridge homes have sold in the high $300K range, and the smaller homes are selling too. Lots of the foreclosures have found owners. If you want to see, just key your address in Zillow.com then click on homes sold in your area. Very informative.

2 Aminals turned into to shelter today from Cascade Shores

Are they yours? A lovely ( and I mean that) male pitbull was brought in today. He walked into a home on Banner Quaker Hill Rd. a block from the store, and stayed the night. After a warm night in the garage and a hearty breakfast, he was brought into the shelter. Very sweet and well behaved dog. All white with a few black spots. He's waiting for his family at Sammies Friends shelter. He was wearing a green canvas collar, no tags.
Someone on Cascade Drive brought in a female Calico adult cat. Very friendly. Had been hanging around their house for a week or so.

I mentioned Sam on a former blog. He was turned in to the shelter over a 6 weeks ago, and described as "bossy." He elderly owner could not handle him. After a month of no interested adopters, I brought Sam home to give him a break from the shelter. He is not only NOT bossy, he is the most congenial doggie houseguest I've ever had, and I've had many! Friendly, fun and sweet, he has fit in perfectly with our tribe. Anyway, it has been determined that Big Sam (38 lbs!) has heartworm infection, and must now undergo painful treatment, as his owner did not see fit to give him a very inexpensive pill a month. He is on anti-biotic, and in another week will get his first injection to kill the worms. Why am I telling you this? Well, Sammies Friends (aka Nevada County Shelter) has agreed to pay for Sam's treatment, so he gets better and becomes more adoptable. He will stay here with us during his recovery, and should be fine in a month or so. Caroline Inglis has volunteered her kids to have a lemonade/cookie booth at the big lake over Memorial weekend to help defray the cost of Big Sam's treatment. So, if you would like to help, please come by the boat ramp on Saturday, 3/27, or if you would like to donate, you can send me a check made out to Sammies's Friends, at 15855 Banner Quaker Hill Rd, 95959. Just put "Big Sam" in the note. Thanks. And friends, if you have a dog, please give them that monthly pill. Spare them the pain and suffering of such a preventable disease. It can be devastating, and will eventually take their life.

Sharon Hess over on Nugget told me that the local garbage marauding bear has turned to poultry. Her 3 hens were turned into a midnight snack the other night by the bruin. So, keep your pets inside at night. She plans to contact Fish and Game about this bear. Feels like he is becoming a big to carnivorous. Their usual food choice is manzanita berries and such, but when they get used to garbage, they quickly learn to prefer that over berries. So do our bear buddies a favor and don't put your garbage out till Thu morning. Don't compromise their safety or yours by making garbage available, or chickens.

Lake Cleanup a success thanks to a great group of kids

The Americorp kids camping at Firehouse came down to LML in their bus and KICKED BUTT cleaning up the lake/park. What a great group! I've never seen it look better. They moved sand to the beach, set benches, cut up trees (come and get the pine rounds in parking lot if you want). It would have not happened without them, as very few residents (sadly) showed up. Lost Mine Lake is such a great resource, and such a wonderful peaceful setting for us here in the Shores. Pam said she already has 4 bookings for the 2011 season, including a baby shower and 2 weddings. SO if you are planning an event there, be sure to book with Pam Herrenkohl soon. You'll find her number on the board list.

Well, we got that snow today, as did Grass Valley and Nevada City. Woke up to that wonderful silence you only sense when fresh snow is falling. It's just the right amount, with no disruption of roads. Enjoy, it'll be hot enough soon. Just sorry for the Amgen Tour bikers trying to pedal around Tahoe today. BURRRRR. They'll be coming thru Nevada City and Grass Valley tomorrow if on schedule. Brave souls.

I was so sad to hear that someone tore the doors off Mateo's Pub last week, trying to burglarize the place. Matt Margiles, former CS residents owns the pub, and it serves wonderful food, plus has fun entertainment. The outside dining area is the best in Nevada City. If you haven't eaten there, be sure to try. I swear, theives are getting bolder and stupider. What were they going to steal from a restaurant, and on a day they were closed, when clearly there would not be money on premises. A few weeks ago some guys tore the bars off La Cache jewelry on Broad Street at 2am. They got caught on Hwy 49 when a National Hotel employee saw the crime and called NCPD. Desperate times?

wondering who the group camping at Firehouse are? It is a group of about 26 young Americorp and Fire Safe Council helpers. They are making a firebreak in the woods up by Red Dog and Quaker Hill Cross Road. They will be here till Sunday. They said another group will be coming in that will stay for2 weeks. So, if you want to be a good neighbor, and thank them for their service (they are volunteers afterall) stop by with some treats and a good word! I heard they are even going to help at Lost Mine Lake Saturday. I spoke with a few yesterday, and they are really nice kids.

Lost Mine Lake Cleanup

So, the annual cleanup is Saturday the 14th (coming up). I hear CSHA is putting 2 new benches at the Lake, and one at the dog beach (some vandals destroyed the one I built for dog beach. Bummer). Hope they are serving lunch! So grab a tool and wheelbarrow and come down. Beats looking at all the downed trees at your own place, right?

Speaking of, I drove around Mt. View today. Boy, the really got clobbered by that storm. So many big trees are now large piles of firewood. Reminder: burn permits are needed now. I'm guessing the burn season will be short this year, so get a jump if you plan to burn.

Went to the Casa de Inglis yesterday. They live right next to boat ramp. While I was the, they saw (I missed) a young bear cub scoot right across the yard on it's way to the lake. Lot's of bear sightings lately. The lake is FULL, FULL, FULL. Can't wait for the boating season to start. Last Saturday was the "no motor" day. Time to buy that $150 season pass.

Talked to Dixie Redfearn today. She's loving live in Urange County. She's jazzed that Costco and T. Joe's are so close she can go just to pick up one item. I don't know, sounds dangerous to me. Everytime we go for toilet paper we seem to come home with a gazebo or some strange impulse thingy. Anyway, she's bragging about all the great weather. I kind of like our "crap shoot" weather. You never know what you'll get from one moment to the next.

Sam the un-bossy Doxie

Hi All, I'm Sam. I've been at the shelter for a month, cause my former mom said I was bossy. I'm a Doxie, so duh. Doxie is German for "large and in charge." Anyway, I am in foster care now with Denise, and she said I am not bossy in the least. I immediately got along with Jenna the dog and Katy the TOTALLY BOSSY Chihuahua. I ignored the two kitties, and found a wonderful bed on the floor. I politely tell you when I have to go outside to do my business, and I love watching TV from the sofa. I will gladly accompany you on a walk, and I don't bark unless there's a darn good reason. Do you want a great doggie companion? Come meet me at 15855 Banner Quaker Hill Rd. I'm only 3 1/2, so I plan to live a long happy life with my next family. I'd love to meet you. By the way, I have a quirk. I actually smile! Denise will try to get a picture of me smiling. The idea is to teach foster kids the trade, so they are employable when they "age out" of the system. What a great idea. Anyway, this Thurs. they are hosting a Cinco De Mayo dinner starting 6PM. $2 donation at door, and buy your authentic Mexican food to celebrate! Sounds like fun, and what a great cause. The statistics on how many foster children enter a world of poverty due to lack of education after age 18 is shocking. So, you can help by attending this event and extending your support. I guess every one is in a "clearing" mode with this great weather. The chain saws are buzzing, I see delivery trucks bringing soil and lumber, etc. Looks like we're all in the mood to clear and beautify. It's important to get all the fallen trees/branches cut and burned or stored to reduce fire danger this summer. Hope all the "vacation home" people will join in soon. Those who live here stay very concerned through the summer/fire season months. We all need to do our part to keep the Shores firesafe. That means tackle that cleanup asap. The county chipper is driving around chipping the stuff you have neatly stacked (stems out towards road). Take advantage!

WEINER REPORT: Doxie lovers, there is a charming LARGE doxie at the NC shelter named Sam. Very handsome red boy. I thought he was baring his teeth to me, but today I realized he was smiling! We went for a walk together, and he is just the most charming sweet boy. Even with his "full figure" he was able to hop easily up on a bench and lean his head against my shoulder, and lightly kissed me. It was like a date. Anyway, his family surrendered him cause he was "bossy." Yes, Doxies are bossy. They like to rule the roost if possible. So, if you know anyone that wants a wonderful handsome boy, who needs to go on a diet, send them to the shelter. Sam is waiting for you!

Don't know if you missed me, but I'm back. The Womens Club held their Easter Party last weekend, and it was as charming and fun for the little ones as always. Great food, games and the kids just never get enough of the pinata (Bill Carter is so good at taunting them with it). Thanks to all the ladies that make Easter such a great memory for the shores kids. Got to speak with Olivia Diaz there, back from her European adventure. She and Ernie just returned from their 6 weeks in France. Great stories, and what could be better than "spring in Paris." She really timed that trip well! Her granddaughter Ava enjoyed the activities, and what a beauty, wearing the latest Paris fashion (I'm not kidding). They do grow up way to fast. Her baby shower was just the other day, and now she's a toddler.

I pulled my shelter shift today, (FOUR darling little wire haired Doxies are available at shelter. What is this, dump your doxie month????). After I stopped by Ben Franklin's and ran into Jeannie Ferguson, former shores resident. She mentioned there will be another reunion of the ladies of the shores this summer (all the residents that met here over the last 10 years). Then I met Karen Lari at Sutton Cinema to see Water for Elephants, which was so wonderful the audience broke into applause a few times. I hope they nominate Rosie the Elephant for a supporting actress award this year. At the theatre, ran into and got to catch up with Chuck and Marvina Jaffee, returned form their 2 1/2 month Arizona experience. They wisely missed all the fun storms lollygagging in the heat of Tucson area. Also saw Karen and Skip Hatton. Where else but Nevada County can you run into 6 people you know in a few hours? That's what I love about this place.

While discussing the hardships of the storms with people, I can't help thinking about Kent and Anna Rees, the only folks I know here with a whole house generator. I swear, at one point during the storm, with power, cable and phones out, & 4 feet of fresh snow in the yard, and Phil and I were living like the Donner Party folks, I bundled up like an arctic explorer to go check on them. I find their house lit up like a Las Vegas casino, cozy fire blazing, a constant 70 degrees throughout, and classical music filling the house (which I call "little Sweden" cause you feel like you just entered a Swedish B&B) and their usual 5 course dinner being served, sans complimentary wine. We on the other hand were dining on banana's and beans, and wearing ski gear to bed. What's wrong with this picture? What I do love about living at 3400 ft, at the end of the road is the pioneer spirit here. I haven't heard one person rant about all the difficulties. It's been more of a "whatchagonnado" type of attitude. I love my neighbors! It's good to have you back all you winter travelers. I don't blame you for bugging out (I did myself for 2 weeks) but it's sure good to see you all back. Looking forward to seeing you all at the big lake this summer. It's right around the corner, right? Yes, the dogwoods have bloomed, and that means spring is here. . . I hope.

We received a $25.00 check from PG&E for loss of use in November. How thoughtful. I also called COMCAST and asked for a refund for the period of non-use in March, and they obliged.
The $$$ are just rolling in. I figure the two 70' oak trees that laid down in front of our house will provide 2-3 cords of firewood, or about $700. Making lemonade out of the lemons! Getting the news from Kent Rees that the trees were blocking my driveway and front door while I was getting a pedi-cure in Arizona, PRICELESS!

Just heard from Billy Barber on Nugget St. that the guy who took down their big leaning oak tree a few weeks ago was the same kid who took a 30' fall when his ropes kit a high voltage line while climbing. Billy said he was a nice kid, and a great climber. Prayers for his recovery.

Speaking of Nugget St, there is a great 2 story house for sale in the middle of the block. Great 2 story family home, with detached 2 car garage, real clean with new carpeting and a newish kitchen. I think they're asking $160K. So many well priced homes for sale now, 1990's prices around here. Seems like homes are moving again, even the bigger ones. I guess we'll be seeing a lot of new families around here. Be sure to educate your new neighbors about the CSHA, and the great propane discount they will receive from Suburban if they join.

OK, I'm going to fess up

I know my neighborhood is in shambles from the snow damage, and some neighbors are really in distress. After the insurance companies, pge and cable contacted, cars repaired or replaced, things will return to normal, (things could be worse, Japan). My across the street neighbors reported they lost not one but two cars, plus main power pole. Stayed home with a borrowed generator. My friend that has a house on Pasquale, and had a renter, had a tree come through the living room roof. The renter (with health problems) had to go to town, as it resulted with a hole in the roof. Dixie and Robert could not get a moving van up the driveway for their move, so she was in the new place with no furniture, he was in the old place with no food/power. Many more stories of difficulty. So, where was I?????
Wellll, I kinda bugged out a week ago and I have been poolside in Arizona. It's been heavenly. Hot days, comfy nights, just the right amount of wind. My kind friends and house-sitters have kept me updated on my place, and I've read the Union for more info (I don't think they know CascadeShores exists!). Will be home soon to survey damage and hopefully observe the beginning of spring. Hang in there neighbors. The silver lining? I think the famous drought is over. Tahoe has received 62 feet of snow this year, 2nd only to 1950, and I guess the Donner Party year. The rivers will be rushing, lakes will be full, farmers will have their water back. Big picture people. Godbless.

Hoping the worst is over

Well, 3 more feet over the last week. Long timers saying that they have not seen this kind of snow in 30 years. Hopefully, this is the storm OF THE CENTURY for us. A 75' oak tree just laid down in my yard, missing my house and cars by inches. Hard to say how much damage from this last snowfall, as they fall, they sometimes disappear into the snow. Perusing the neighborhood, lots of trees leaning against buildings, and unfortunately cars and homes have been damaged. Hope you are doing well. So good to live in a neighborhood where neighbors help neighbors. Keep up the good work all. Cleanup is going to be a challenge when the white stuff melts. Lot power at 9pm Thu. night. Not sure when it comes back. Looks like it may be "awhile."

PLEASE, help the dog running loose on BQHill

All day I've been watching a little pitty (very small) run up and down Quaker Hill in front of my house (The big hill stretch). She/He is lost and confused, and very wet and very scared. I tried to catch, but she runs. If you see her/him and can possibly pull over, maybe you can catch and deliver to the shelter???? I know it's alot to ask, but if nothing else, you might be helping someone else avoid an accident. The dog is running in the middle of the road!

Mike Inglis (yes, security guy Mike) was coming back to the Shores from town on Friday, and stopped on Pasquale to help a disabled car. When he got done, he realized he had dropped his cell phone on the road. Problem was, the plow had gone by, and swept his phone away with the snow. I swear, no good deed goes unpunished. Dixie and Roberts party was well attended at the National yesterday. They have such a far reaching and eclectic group of friends here in Nevada County. The Rotarians (Rotary Club) Kawani's, local politicians, shopkeepers, musicians and writers. Nice to see the two Robert L. Crabbs together. There really are two! This community is so interesting, with so many kind and caring residents, not to mention fun loving!
Robert described Nevada City as "an adult playground" as opposed to the youth oriented society they are returning to in So. Cal. I think that's a great description.
As a baby boomer, I really appreciate the opportunities to join a group no matter what your interests, as all interests are represented somewhere here. Upcoming meetings I am planning to join are Garden Goddesses (organic and herbal gardening group) and Shera Banbury's "thinktank" about women and economics at the Briarpatch meeting room on April 6th. With so many people taking advantage of the real estate market and buying rental/vacation property, I wonder if there is a "landlord" group, so you don't have to reinvent the wheel to get started in investment real estate. Know of one? If not, I guess it's time to start one! Wow, Landlord. What an archaic term. How about "housing/owner provider."

CSHA Annual Meeting

Doug Ferrel from the Road will be there to discuss snow removal issues in the shores. This is your chance to ask questions and meet your neighbors. The board is still looking for a replacement for VP Robert Crabb. If you are interested in getting involved, this would be a good time to step forward~

update: it's 10am sat morn in the Shores, and we got 18" of snow overnight. Calm now. I have not seen the plow this am (heard it last night about 11pm). Lights and water are on! enjoy your weekend. The next storm should move in later on Sunday, with high winds and more precipitation.

Well, at about 8am the water disappeared. Seems someone (??????) went out of their way to drive 8 ft. off the pavement at the store intersection to hit the ONLY fire hydrant I've ever even noticed around there. NID is telling you it's fixed, and they are waiting for pressure to build to return service to your home, but the workers have brought in a digger and they tell me it will be another few hours before we have service again . . . .

The Womens Club hobby/dessert day last Wed. was totally fun. It was amazing to see all the beautiful and complex arts created by locals. I marvel at their talent. From intricate lost-art type of sewing (Jan Guevel) really creative scrapbooking/cards (Carol Carter) knitting (Anna Rees) basket weaving (Karen Hatton) and prize winning quilts (Judy). Linda Lumos brought her wedding cakes album and a beautiful tuscan design wedding cake (fake, but amazing) and if I am forgetting someone, I am sorry. Karen Lari brought her enchilada's, and so many wonderful deserts that I'll have to turn myself back into Weight Watchers. Nicely done! The club is planning an outing to a local production of The King and I, and a visit to the Tulip/Daffodil garden tour of Ananda Village in April. See their calendar on CS.org

Well, after keeping the Husky I found wandering on Quaker Hill for 24 hours, found out he lives right around the corner. He is 13 years old, and I think has a little "dogheimers" if you know what I mean. I make a plea to you all, PUT I.D. ON YOUR ANIMALS, and leave it on at all times! I could have returned him promptly home if he had a tag. Instead, his owner had to worry about him for 24 hours. Seems he went over the fence (good feat, at 13). Working at the shelter, I see many much loved dogs arrive as strays, and we have NO WAY to locate the owners without tags or microchips. After 4 days at shelter they are the property of the shelter, and can be adopted. If they are adopted, we cannot divulge to you, who arrives on day 5, the names of new owners. I also see deceased dogs arrive for disposal. No way to notify owner. This could all be resolved quickly with a tag/micro chip. Lecture over.

Brian's family was one of the first to build in the Shores in the 70's, so you'll be picking up a piece of history!

I'm in the Bay Area and it is glorious. Nice break after all our snow. I take the dogs to Pt. Isabel in Richmond every day, huge off leash dog park, and a glorious view of the Bay and Golden Gate Bridge. Dinner in Berkeley last night (Thai, yum) and visits with friends. Dim Sum tonight with the family (pot luck, so fun) and back home tomorrow. Always great to visit the Bay Area, but equally nice to get home. Going to stop and visit a big animal rescue in Penryn, A Chance for Bliss, which provides sanctuary for senior dogs, horses, goats, and all kind of critters. Life is good!

THANKS TO ALL that put their ewaste in my pickup truck that was parked by store/firehouse last Friday/Sat. I was pleasantly surprised to find my truck overflowing with your electronic/household castaways. This all translated to 5cents a lb for Sammies Friends Animal Shelter (aka Nevada County Shelter) to help house/vet/place all the stray/abandoned/turned in animals of our county. I'm hoping they will do another drive this summer, when we don't have to climb over 4feet of snow to get to our garage junk!

I know you pay a few cents more, but with $4 gas here, it has to be worth it to pick up those items. They even have fresh produce and ice cream, and lots of dry goods. Use it or loose it folks. Sadly, for the second time in a few months, a resident of our wonderful community has died from exposure. I suppose it could be said that they also died from their addiction, as it is most likely what brought them to a state of homelessness. None the less, they died alone in the night, in the elements, without any of the advantages or comforts that anyone able to read this enjoys daily, nightly. I have visited in Nevada City for 40 years. I have lived here for eleven years. I have been aware of William "Billy" Kelly pretty much all that time, though until I read the news article this morning, I did not know his name. To me, he was a rather intimidating looking man I often passed on Broad Street, usually in the vicinity of Bonanza Market or the Post Office. You could see he was of American Indian decent. I admit his appearance sometimes alarmed me, made me uncomfortable. He was often clearly intoxicated. Yet, in his own way, he was impressive. You don't see many people of color in this 97% Caucasian community. Billy looked like a living photo of a Ogalala Sioux you see from the history books. In fact, the paper reported he is a direct decedent of the last Maidu Chief, Chief Kelly. So, in a way, he was royalty. He was born and raised here in Nevada City, attended local schools. So why was this man sleeping outside on Miner's Trail on a 20 degree night? I don't know. Maybe due to his habits, he had burned bridges, alienated friends and relatives. It happens. Still, it breaks my heart that in a community as small as Nevada City ANYONE is so invisible as to have to die alone, cold, probably hungry, under a public bridge. Hospitality House does a great job of feeding and housing our homeless, about 40 per night. However they cannot accept anyone who is under the influence at check in time, and many won't check in because they have dogs, which cannot stay at the shelter. A few weeks ago, I saw Bill Kelly by Bonanza Market. Once again I felt myself looking away from his face, avoiding eye contact. When I got in my car, I vowed that next time I found myself near him I would talk to him, find out who he was, even if only through a brief conversation. I was going to face my fear. I'm sorry I won't get that chance. A friend of Billy's, John Fletcher referred to him as "a sweet, kind man who had a problem with alcohol." I hope to attend any memorial for Billy. I would like to know more about this man, descended from the proudest of Americans. "Be kind to those around you. Every creature is fighting some sort of battle." God bless, stay warm.

I'm ok with the 4' of snow, I'm ok with the power out from Fri, 2am till Sunday 9:01PM. I'm thrilled with the job PG&E did, and roads, and our plow guy is a total rock star. I love all my neighbors and how everyone helped everyone. I am impressed that the Union was delivered amost every day during the storm, ditto the mail. I loved snowshoeing down to the store for a tasty burger. But why Lord, why did you have PGE take out comcast, and make me miss the Awards????? Just kidding. That was one hell of a storm, but the powers that be sure came together. PG&E was even helicoptering in workers to get poles up in the back country. What an impressive effort, to have power restored in 72 hours. It has been so beautiful and sunny since Sunday. Pasquale is in good shape, and news say they will widen it today. The absence of power really seems to bring us all together. I HEART my generator though, as a hot shower always makes things better. Hope you all made it through. Now the cleanup begins! (Dixie just told me she DID get to watch the Awards cause she has a generator and satellite. Oh, dish envy.)

Looking for a new best friend? There will be an adopthanon, "Chiwauwa's and More" at Muttley's Pet Emporium on East Main St, GV this Sat, 11AM. They have babies! You have never seen anything as cute as a baby Chihuahua. Angels from heaven. My new foster dog, Katie is a chi/doxie mix. Sweet, loving, playful, loyal and just that perfect touch of evil! She thinks EVERYTHING is a toy. So cute to see her dragging my steel toed boots that weigh more than she does up onto the sofa. She loves it when I pull her around the yard in a giant sled. She needs a 4ever home, are you the one?????? Ever though about fostering? It's so much fun! If you are interested in becoming a foster parent to a much deserving dog, call me and I'll clue you in. The rescuer pays all expenses, even food if you need. You just need to give Fluffy or Bowzer a safe sane home while they network (Scooters Pals/Petfinder) to find his 4ever family.

If they are CS residents (and even some that are not) I always advise them that for a mere $15 a year, we can list them on our provider list. I also get calls and emails, as a result of this blog and website. Disclaimer: I am not personally promoting these people. Everyone's work/business must speak for itself. I'm just the messenger. I am also doing this independent of the HomeOwner's assn. Just trying to provide a service myself through this blog. I often get email's from the Newby's, asking who, what, how? I can only tell them what I personally know/experience. So, if you want to be on the service provider list with your business, CALL SOMEONE ON THE BOARD and get listed. Best $15 you'll ever spend. To me, it's always PREFERABLE if they are a resident, cause I just HATE having a plumber or someone like that tell me "it's eighty bucks just to drive to the Shores and look at it." You can order chipping from them by filling out the form on their website or calling 272-1122, and paying the $50 donation. At the present time they do not have grant $$ to subsidize the program, so the donation is important.

Yes, it's true, Dixie Readfearn and Robert Crabb and packing up and moving back to Orange County to be with kids and grandkids. Our loss is their gain. I have personally LOVED having them as friends, which Dixie promises will continue despite the 500 mile gap. Robert has been a longtime CSHA board member, and it will be hard to fill his shoes. Dixie is just an all around great person and friend, and has taught me much in our years of friendship. Then of course there is Jackson, the Golden Retriever. I remember the day Dixie and I raced to Lodi to snag that 3 toed sloth from Golden Rescue before Robert got home to nix the idea! Yes, it IS better to ask forgiveness than permission, right Dix? So, wishing them the best, and hoping they will return often, and bring some of that LA sunshine with them. Also hoping to visit you guys there. I know they will dive into community service and renew their friendships just as they did here. We'll miss you at the Shelter to Dix. Any one want to fill her Wed afternoon shoes?

Just talked to a PGE rep outside. They are looking for broken trees that are threatening lines so they can clear before tomorrows storm. They could use your eyes! If you know of such a tree, please call them at 1-800-743-5000 and report to them. THANKS FOR ALL OF US! Not looking forward to another power outage, though I am ready! Remember to pick up that extra gas for generator, and candles/batteries when in town. I think we will turn the hot tub into a giant freezer since it's empty. Be careful out there, and exercise patience on Pasquale. Stop and help anyone stuck or over the edge. Next time it could be you! Pay it forward people.

A man from 11000 block of Alpine Ln reported his home was broken into and a 9mm gun and 2 lbs. of marijuana were taken. OK, BAGGED. NOW WOULDN'T THAT INDICATE SALES? A 9mm. Really? Expecting Opossums? Lots of them?
A woman from the 11000 block of Ball Rd reported people hiding on her roof. ON THE ROOF? WOULDN'T THAT BE HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT? REALLY, PICTURE TRYING TO HIDE ON A ROOF. LOOK, I'M INVISIBLE! ON THE ROOF!

My my, the snow just kepta comin! There is about a foot on the ground, though it is the nice fluffy stuff, not the cement we got in November. The power has been iffy, and in fact was just restored at 5pm today (Sat) after going out in the wee hours last night. We woke up at 3am to fireworks here at the corner of BQH and Pasquale, when the a power wire snapped on the transformer. Fireworks and flames for about 10 minutes, looked like a lovely roman candle. Bill Carter saw the light from a block behind on Nugget St. Took out power, cable, phone. We called the fire department, and they said they were on the way, but had to wait for the plow to clear the road for them to come in from NCity. Very exciting. But lovely blue skies shined thru today (what is that bright blue stuff above, and that light?????). Plow has done a great job of keeping the big hill clear. Personally, I have been in bed since Monday with the worst flu/grunge EVER, and let the whole mess stack up inside and out. Just feeling human today.

Doxies at the NC Shelter

All right ya'll. The two 2 yr old black/tan boys were abandoned in the parking lot at KMART.
The three were orphaned when their elderly "mommy" died last year.
7 year old male (blond) 2 year old male (red) 2 year old female (black/tan).
They are all waiting patiently at Sammies Friends shelter for their new family. Is it you?????

Confessions of a Pizza Snob

Yes, my name is Denise, and I am a Pizza snob. I have to taste the pizza in every city in every country I visit. Chicago, deep dish, great fillings, but too much crust. LA, "Pizza Kitchen" type stuff, well, really, is that pizza? Save the Thai Chicken for, well, Thai Chicken dishes. Also, do not dump a salad on top of my pizza, it's disturbing. Middle of the US, say, Nebraska or Iowa, PLEASSSE, do you not own herbs? By the way Iowa, that's not crust, it's bread. What is that stuff you are calling cheese????? Mexico, guys, you just got it all wrong. San Francisco, your heart is in it, especially in little Italy section, but, still, why are you so in love with big crust? Just cause you make the best sour dough bread doesn't mean you should put it under a pizza. Jupiter Pizza in Berkeley, great, if you like that gourmet twist, like pear and gorgonzola, served with root beer flavored beer, which I do on occasion. The crust is perfect though. I even had pizza in Hoi An, a little village in central Viet Nam, could not pass up the opportunity. I must say, not bad, but I think because there are so many Euorpean's living there, and they demand good homeland food. Now, New York. Perfection. Skinny oily crust, a perfect smear of paste, properly seasoned, and a grating of really creamy cheese, perfectly melted, and pepperoni to die for. Which brings me to the reason I am writing this. I haven't had what I consider really good pizza in Nevada County in 10 years, since Cowboy Pizza on Spring St. closed their doors. I've had what other people say is good, or even great (Franks, Northridge) however it's just not to my snobby authentic pizza standards. However, went to Goomba's on Colfax Hwy. across from Memorial Park Friday night, and had a GREAT NEW YORK STYLE PEPPERONI PIZZA. While the crust could have been even a little thinner, it was still lovely. The sauce was perfect, the cheese creamy, and the pepperoni nice and salty and crunchy. THANK YOU GOOMBA'S. By the way, their beef and pepper sandwich is as good as any I've had in Chicago. Hmmm, happy.

"Baby" needs a home

There is the cutest little Chihuahua at the Nev. County Shelter. Little "baby" weight about 6 lbs, is blond and tiny and sweet. She just wants to hang out with her person and be held and loved as much as possible. She was abandoned, so not much is known, but sweet, sweet, sweet. Do you know someone looking for a little lovebug? She's in the lobby at the shelter. Thanks.

Walking around, I see that alot of the "short sells" have been bought up. Still wondering when we will see bottom of this market. Just heard from a couple who tried to buy a house last fall when it was a regular sale, fell out, and now they succeeded purchasing the same house as a short sale. So, I'm guessing they got a much better deal. Kind of ironic. It doesn't make sense, but then, what about the real estate debacle did? I guess the silver lining is that lots of people that had been priced out of the market are in.

So the B&B ordinance allowing reopenings of B&B's in Nevada City failed. Ah well, Nevada City is not known to be business friendly. I would have thought they'd have jumped at the chance to restore a few, since so many have closed. Deer Creek Inn is the latest to close. That only leaves 2 or 3 B&B's and the National Hotel. If you've ever stayed there you know is it sadly outdated and I think the beds are from the 50's. The 1850's.

Just read in Jeff Pelines Sierra Foothill Report of the passing today of Nevada City's own, Charles Woods. Charles and his partner David Osborn were multi- talented, incredibly artistic and visionary men who arrived in Nevada City when it was a rather run down diamond in the rough. Their efforts certainly led the way for what you see today. In addition to saving the Foundry building and leading many a conservation effort, Charles created the Teddy Bear Museum that was housed on the corner of Pine and Spring (the large building currently being renovated). His accomplishments are to long to be listed here, but check out Jeff Peline's article on him. I met Charles many times, and found him sweet, shy, charming and mostly an immensely generous man. A celebration of his life will be observed in the spring. I would not want to miss that. They don't make them like Charles anymore.

Want to help Nev County Shelter by getting rid of your e-waste

The shelter (aka as Sammies Friends) is sponsoring a e-waste drive on Sat. March 5th, from 9-1pm at Knights Paints (on Sutton, past the CVS Pharmacy, 2 business past the Dollar Store). This means you can bring all that electronic and electric stuff you've been meaning to dump to that site instead of going all the way to McCortney transfer station. The shelter will get $$$$ for your recycling. So here's the list of things they will accept:
Monitors, TV's, desktop and notebook PC's, VCR's, stereo's, keyboards, mice (the computer kind!) digital camera, cellphones, zip drives, printers, copiers, multi function scanners and fax, small household appliances such as toasters, blenders, mixers, vacuum cleaners with dust bags removed (basically, anything with an electrical plug).

Sorry, NO: large appliances, refrigerators, washers, dryers, microwaves. No paints, chemicals, pesticides, oil, batteries or the like.

I'll try to post a flyer by the Firehouse and store as a reminder.

Speaking of gold (who isn't?) have you caught the new reality show on Discovery, Gold Rush Alaska? I was riveted the other night watching 4 episodes in a row (I know, get a life). It's about a bunch of unemployed (who isn't?) Oregonians that sell everything they can, pull together $200,000 and drive huge equipment up to Porcupine Creek, Alaska, where they learn, ON THE JOB, how to gold mine their claim. The whole process of building their "mine" and working the gravel is pretty amazing. What is also amazing is just how hard some people will work, and dream, in order to do what has to be done to take care of their families. The hardships and challenges are countless, and they are living where the bears outnumber people 3/1. My "free range" ShihTzu's finally got adopted. Found the PERFECT couple from Auburn. They will be going to their new home on 5 lovely sunny acres in No. Auburn on Saturday. Lucky girls. They have been a joy in our house for the past few months, other than Rory's 2 week "unauthorized camping trip" into the woods behind our house.

Also in the Union today, a 9 pound gold nugget found on property near Washington up on Hwy 20, part of Omega-Malakoff Tertiary Channel is expected to sell at auction for about $400K. Wow, nice find. Apparently Jim Sanders of San Francisco found it on his property, which is estimated to have about 3,800 ounces of gold in the first few feet. Crimeny, that's about 5Mil. at $1400 an oz. Wonder what he paid for the property? I used to mine on the creeks of Washington in my misspent youth. Found a little. It is easy to get gold fever!

Nevada County Shelter on McCortney is overflowing with cats and dogs. Please, if you've been considering adopting, or feel like you have the ability to foster, contact them. Too many people are walking away from their responsibilities to their pets. One guy recently came in saying he had to turn in his 4 year old lab and 4 year old shepard because he was moving. I asked where he was moving to. "Alta Sierra." Where are you moving from sir? "Alta Sierra." So, I guess it was to much trouble to find a rental that would accept his pets, or find a suitable home for them himself. The shelter legally has to take strays, but does not have to take "turn ins" and must often turn them away from lack of space. Unfortunately, these dogs are then dumped, like unwanted trash.

We saw Paula Poundstone on New Years Eve, hilarious! She spent some time making fun of our delightful community, and Grass Valley for the "candy throwing debacle" at the recent "Toys for Tots" motorcycle run. Really, where else would such activity merit countless articles in the paper and letters to the editor. How small town is that. If you missed it, the motorcyclists drive toys from the Rood Center to the fairgrounds, and toss candy to bystanders. Many people complained about the candy becoming litter on the street, and the fact that one cyclist was not wearing a helmet! I think they missed the point . . . . .

Losing the Rock

Rocky, the little rescue Chug (Chi-Pup) that arrived in our home in late August from Scooters Pals rescue. We were to foster him while awaiting his "forever home." He was in poor condition, and had to have half his teeth pulled and put on meds for his back disc. Over time and with lots of love and TLC he became a sweet little hug bug. Rocky took ill a week before Christmas, but despite valiant efforts by 3 vets and Scooters Pals financial assistance, he went "home" on 12/26/10. He gave me one last kiss a hour before he passed. We learned alot from each other. I learned that even a little dog in serious pain, that had been abandoned after 10 years can turn around and give lots of love, and that 4 months of friendship can feel like a lifetime. Rocky is sleeping under the great Cedar Tree next to Harry and Bella. I love you my little friend. Next time, please stay longer . . . .

Wed, no Victorian Christmas but the lights are fantastic

No Victorian Christmas tonight, but the shopkeepers are open till 9pm for your last minute needs. I drove up Broad and onto East Broad last night. Spectacular decorations and lighting. The two victorians at the corner of East Broad and Main (past the Outside Inn) were breathtaking. Also, the Victorian at the wedge of West Broad and East Broad, and all the homes that begin there at East Broad. I'm doing a car tour tonight just to get in the mood. Hope you're enjoying the beautiful season loyal readers. I LOVE YOU MAN!

Saturday is our Childrens Christmas Party at Firehouse

Since it's raining kittens and puppies, if you want to give your kids a break from the monotony take them to the firehouse for the annual kids party with SANTA from 1pm-3pm. Fun, food, games and gift bags for all. Terry Anasopolous is the chair, and as usual she does a wonderful job along with the other Women's Club members.

Thanks for all the comments to the prior blog about the homeless and dogs. I think we can all agree that there is nothing easy about this economy, and "there but for the grace of God go I."
Everyone out there with no place to live is someones son, daughter, mother, father, sister, brother. It's easy to look away when you pass someone like that, as it is hard to accept and acknowledge the suffering. I now make a point to talk to people I pass that are experiencing hard times, and if I can offer them something, I do so and try to have at least a brief conversation. Look them in the eye, ask a direct question, "are you local" or "where are you from?" I honestly see a change in body english and a raising of the spirit when you acknowledge the humanity, to someone who may be feeling less than human at that moment. Take that time if you can. Thank you.

Dan Hicks (aka, Dan Hicks and his Hot Licks) is appearing (remember "I scare myself"). He's just great, and so entertaining, part of the old 70's Bay Area music scene, and huge in Europe. Our best kept secrets are revered in Europe. Then there's the Trailer Park Troubadours. If you've never seen them, you MUST. They sing about life in the Shady Glen trailer park, and the lyrics are hysterical, but the music is bluesy, jazzy, country and seriously talented musicians. "My girlfriend whistles when she walks. Not because she's happy, but because she has so many body piercings the wind goes through them." Thirdly, on New Years Eve we're catching Paula Poundstone at the Center of the Arts. I've seen her a number of times over the years, and she never disappoints. What ever you do, have a great time doing it.

Homeless with a pet

During my last shift at the shelter I got a call from a woman. I wasn't sure at first what she was trying to say, as the conversation went like this: Me: Sammies Friends Animal Shelter. How can I help you? Her: Hi, I live in Nevada City, and I just saw a man with a dog. I think he is homeless. . . . . Me: Ok, can you describe the problem? Her: Well, I'm just thinking because he is homeless, well, that's not a very good life for a dog. . . . . . Me: Well, I suppose it's not a very good life for anyone, but many dogs are accustomed to living outside. Did the dog look sick? Her: Well, no. But still, it just doesn't seem right. Me: Was this on Broad St overpass, and was the man a large man with blond hair, and a yellow dog? Her: Yes. Me: I see them all the time. That dog looks like he hasn't missed a meal in years. He appears happy and well fed, and I'm guessing well loved. Mam, there is no law against having a dog just because you are homeless. But if you want, you can give the owner the number of the shelter, and if he wants, I can drop him off some food. Or better yet, next time you see him, why don't you give him some dog food, and maybe a bagged lunch with coffee money?That dog may be the only relationship he has, you know. Her: Well, OK. Still, it doesn't seem right.

How we deal with power outage

Thanks Pam and Robin for your comments on my previous blog. Now that things have calmed down, I want to share what Phil and I have learned after 11 winters here, with the occasional power outage:

You're sitting in the living room, watching your favorite show. Lights on, cake in the oven, fridge stocked, heater blasting. OOPS, lights out. Silently we rise from our comfy seats. Phil grabs and lights the two oil lamps in the dining room, sets one on the dining table, gives me one for living room. Using that light, we grab the 10 or so glass tea candle holders, and light those candles, disbursing them to each room we want to use over the next few hours, especially the bathroom, ya know. Light gas BBQ and transfer the food in the oven to the BBQ. Go to garage and pull out the generator ($500 at Costco, worth every dime). Gas it up, plug it in and connect 3 power cords (1) TV, cause Phil is always in the middle of a game, (2) fridge (obviously) (3) tankless water heater. Start a roaring fire in the fireplace if not already going. Pull out the camp stove that uses a propane can and boil a pot of water. Pour the water into the coffee pot directly over the grounds. Pour a nice hot cup of java. Sit back down and enjoy the beautiful ambiance and the incredible nature show in the yard. Total time spent: 20 minutes. Cost: zero. Enjoyment: priceless. Frustration level: NOT!
Yea, it took a few storms to finally figure it out, but that was part of the fun!

Article in the Union today regarding an about to be ex-husband shooting the "new boyfriend." Cops called it justifiable homicide. Apparently the boyfriend went to the ex's house with a claw hammer to do some damage, and hubby was waiting in the barca-lounger with a very loaded pistol. Boyfriend enters house with dangerous looking hammer, husband shoots him dead at close range from barca-lounger. Didn't break a sweat. Anyhoo, did the boyfriend really never see Sean Connery in the Untouchables???? Remember the line, "never bring a knife to a gunfight." Same goes with carpentry tools . . . . .

So weird when you drive into town, and the sun is shining, people are moving around, wearing shorts. I feel like I live in Siberia! I'm wearing my layers, hiking boots, and keeping a snow shovel in the car. Then I remember why I moved here. After living in the Bay Area all my life (aka the Gray Area) where the only variance is fog season/no fog season, I wanted to experience a real seasonal change. I love the winter challenges, the extreme quiet after a snowfall, and the way my yard looks like a black and white photo. Then the wonder of burst of life in spring, warm weather from Memorial Day till Labor day, and the spectacular Fall here. I know these occasional drastic storms can make for inconvenience, but really, out of 365 days, how many are tough? It's definitely a different way of life, than living in LA or Berkeley. It draws a certain type of person, and I have met the most interesting people of my life right here in Nevada County, and especially in Cascade Shores. So, for my friends that stay, and laugh off the inconveniences, I salute you. Can't wait to get together over drinks at Christmas and swap "war" stories about the Thanksgiving storm of 010. Love ya!

How to handle bear encounters

Welcome to our park. You may know that we have 2 kinds of bears here, black bears, and Grizzleys. Black bears are typically shy, so if you are traveling within the park, you may want to make a little noise or break branches, so the bears will be aware of you and avoid crossing your path. Grizzyly's on the other hand can be quite aggressive and have been known to attack, so we suggest that you wear small bells on your clothes to warn the bear, and carry pepper spray. Another way to tell what kind of bear is in the area is to look at their scat (poop). Black bear scat contains berries, and sometimes the fur of small rodents. Grizzly bear poo on the other hand contains little bells, and smells of pepper. Enjoy!

Saw a neighbor moving in on Pasquale a few weeks ago, a nice young woman and her 10 year old daughter. We discussed the need for 4 wheel drive at times, and the cooler temps here, possible power outages due to trees falling, and of course lots of snow at times. Well, a few days later in "the storm" a tree came through her roof shoving the stovepipe down and the stove into the living room, followed by a 4 1/2 day power outage. I saw her packing her Uhaul today. Mother nature can be cruel.

Since the middle of the night. People are coming slowly down big hill. Haven't heard the plow yet, but it usually doesn't start till 2" on the ground. Pasquale way dry last night coming in, so should be just the new stuff on it. NevadaCityWebCam showing it only drizzling in town.

When you are clearing the snow from your driveway, or having it cleared, please remember to clear the space in front of your mailboxes. Denise has strict orders from her supv. not to exit the truck to deliver mail (excluding large packages). So if she cannot reach your mailbox from her window, your mail will be returned to the post office until she can reach.

Helpful hint to the weekenders: If you are in the habit of turning off the water at your home, and at the street to prevent your pipes from freezing, consider turning a garbage can or 5 gal bucket over the outside access, so you can locate it under 2' snow. You're welcome.

30 degrees and ICY

Happy day before Thanksgiving. I am thankful our home is in one piece, and our power is on, and friends will be able to make it in for dinner 2morrow.
No so for about 1/2 of Cascade Shores. Hopefully the homes on other side of store will be online by end of day.
BIG HILL IS ICY, as is Pasquale and all of the shores. Please be careful and keep on your side of road on Pasquale. It's one of those days where 5 MPH may be too fast. Arrive safe.
It's sunny and beautiful, but too cold to melt.

Did I really write that post a few days ago? Ok, since Sat, 20" fell, cold wet heavy stuff. Trees stared snapping and keeling over. Big trees, like 75-100 ft trees. Power went out when these big trees took out MANY power poles all over Banner Mt (Banner Lava Cap, Quaker Hills, and all the little streets in Cascade Shores). Trees have gone thru roofs, broken off chimneys, blocked driveways so folks can't get their cars out. Power is just now (Tues 5:30) being restored in our area, out since Sat. It looks like a battlefield around here. More snow and freezing temps (below 20) 2nite, so brace yourself for more action. Winds this am did not result in much more damage.
Roads are decent, but I imagine the freezing temps coming will change that, and we will be skating on ice. Sooo, be careful out there. If my new neighbors Patty and Greg are reading this, no damage at your house, just large branches down. 3 doors down, not so good. Renter just moved in, and a tree hit the chimney pipe and pushed it right into the living room. Don't think she even got unpacked. So, we'll all remember Thanksgiving week 2010. This is one for the history books. Our trees are growing taller as I write . . . . . interesting. . . . . .
Power is on Quaker Hill to Store, and Pasquale loop. Should have power on other side in next 12 hours, that's what the PAR electrical workers advised. The crews out here were amazing! They worked thru the worst conditions to get us back online asap. Thank you awesome Dudes!

Saturday, 1st snow of year

Hi ya'll,
Well, I can't remember having the white stuff before T-day, but it's here this year! As of 4pm we have about 6" here, fluffy and perfect. Slight wind, and the plow is doing a great job. More due 2nite and tomorrow. Drove to town to grab gas for the generator (walked by that empty gas can a million times this summer, but kept forgetting to take to town). Easy drive in on Pasquale, but heard there was a big tree down on Quaker Hill this am. Lost power about 9am, and lost Comcast same time, and it was wondrously quiet till all restored at 4:15. Enjoy. Don't you love it when it falls on the weekend.

Moving in, moving out, moving on

Life is full of change and transformations, ain't it. Terry Asanathapolis (who was our mail lady for MANY years) said good bye to her daughter Molly, who after 30 some years in Nevada City area is moving to the great city of Portland, Oregon. As Molly, who lived in N San Juan recently said, "maybe you have to move to the big city to get away from the noise of all those barking dogs." Cities are noisy, but maybe not as noisy as the woods in some respects. Ever notice how you can hear a dog bark from 1/2 mile away, or hear the wing flaps of a raven crossing your yard, or hear the constant pelt of the acorns falling from your trees? The sounds of silence in the woods can be deafening.
I first laid eyes on Nevada City when I was 16. As my girlfriend and I drove up Hwy 49 under the Broad St. overpass, there was a fresh dusting of snow on the trees. The gold rush buildings looked perfect, as if they had just been built, and the fall colors were lingering. I had never seen such a beautiful town. I vowed that I would live here one day on that very trip. I was raised in Berkeley, Ca, and San Francisco was my playground. I graduated, worked in San Francisco for 10 years, then over to Walnut Creek and Danville area, for a total of 19 years. I have visited many of the great US cities, New York, Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, Seattle, Boston. 10 years ago I walked away from my job of 29 years, and bought a home in Cascade Shores. My dream was to leave the big city, and move to the mountains, and find friends and community in a small town. Molly's dream is to leave the mountains, escape the small townness, and move to the CITY. Ain't life funny. I hear this story repeated often in speaking with people from/moved to Nevada City. I guess the opposite lifestyle can be very appealing.
I hope Molly finds what she seeks, and as much happiness in Portland as I have found in Nevada County.
The demographics of Cascade Shores have changed since my move in April of 2000. The "old timers" are mostly gone, the real pioneers of this area. Now you see bicycles, toys and lots of boats and motorcycles in the yards, instead of the family sedan. There has been much change in the last decade. At 68 and 57, I guess Phil and I are the new "old timers" and keepers of the history. I know the names of the 2 men who originally sold the lots here, Goldberg and Cooley. I know Sharon Hess, who says she and her husband did alot of the the grading and driveway building. I know my house was known as the "Butterfield house" as that was the original family that lived in it 40 year ago. I know that Lost Mine Lake was nothing but a small swampy area, before it was a lovely park. I know that there are hot springs beyond Lost Mine Lake, and I know from my hikes exactly where you can find the most bear poop. I know that if you stay on Banner Quaker Hill Rd beyond the shores, you will hook up with Hwy 20 by the Washington Rd. I know that Dorothy and Lloyd Honey donated the land for the firehouse, and Dorothy kept 3 HUGE Maine Coon cats and wove intricate pine needle baskets.
I hope someone else younger than me takes the time to find these things out. History should not be lost, even the little perhaps insignificant things.
I went to Eugene, Oregon last weekend for my sister's memorial. She died on 10/20/10 after a 4 1/2 year battle with breast cancer, transforming from her pain on earth, to her peace in the great beyond. Her history, and our history together lives as long as I live, and her daughter and grandchildren who loved her. I like that. Miss you Lindy.

Aurora was trapped tonight in my very back yard, that bad girl. Neighbors thankfully reported many sightings of her, including her keeping company with a black Lab. No wonder she didn't come home, she had a tall, dark, good looking boyfriend!

But not as mad as the Wisconsin man who blasted his TV with his shotgun, that ended with a standoff with a SWAT team. Whoa, that's taking reality TV to serious pal. . . . . . . .

Well, if you read the below, I have to share the good and bad news. 2 dogs were wonderfully adopted, 1 is in foster with intent to adopt, and one is with a foster until the perfect home is found. Unfortunately, 2 escaped 2 different locations, and are probably trying to make their way home.

4 members of the Cascade Shores Womens Club participated last Friday night in "Are you as Smart as a 6th Grader." The team competition benefits the schools, hot meals, etc. for local kids. After placing 2nd last year, we were confident we could win a prize this year, and we did! We received the "Sour Apple" award, a beautiful glass apple, for placing DEAD LAST. Ohhhh, those questions. The algebra made me dizzy, the history drew a blank, the ecology was GREEK. I think we got 18 right out of 40. So, next year, we need you brainiacs to join our team! Sample question: Of all the countries Alexander the Great conquered, how many had cities named after him, Alexandria? 1, 4, 7, 13. another: What civilization invented the wheel? Chinese, Samarians, Greeks, Phoenicians. SEE WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT. I should go back to school, starting with 3rd grade! No fair googling. Did I mention I was one of the four geniuses?

My last blog was about November being "adopt a senior animal" month. Well, the other day I was contacted by a neighbor about a situation. A nice man in Nev. City lost his wife in June to cancer. They have 11 (yes, eleven) beautiful healthy dogs. However, he feels he can no longer care for them all. So, he has decided to try to adopt out 7. If you know anyone who would love to add these lovely girls to their family, we have 6 Shih Zu's, female, spayed, microchipped, shots current, groomed and friendly as they can be, PLEASE CALL ME at 265-8680. The girls range in age from 2-10 years old. Also, a lovely American Eskimo named Frosty, about 9 years old. A little shy, but sweet and just beautiful. You never see dogs like this come into the shelter. This is a great opportunity to own a beautiful, sweet, settled dog who will love you back in spades! THe little gals are dying for attention. Spread the word. Sparkle, Aurora, Jasmine, Lilo, Belle and Holly Noel thank you. Frosty too.

The Womens Club (including yours truly) manned (womaned?) the Polling Place on election day, thereby earning $450 for the Club, which will be used to further entertain the local kids, in addition to other community improvements. They are considering having a winter activity for the Tweens, maybe a movie night or social of some sort. They also joined with homeowners assn. to buy one of those cute large popcorn machines for the summer movie nights.
There were about 25 kids plus assorted parents at the Halloween party. The kids have such a great time showing off their costumes. These ladies never run out of steam when it comes to providing fun and energy to community events. Terry Anasopolous headed the team. Thanks Terry.

NOVEMBER IS "ADOPT A SENIOR MONTH"

No, were not talking about Grandma here. The fact is, may senior dogs and cats are turned into shelters every day, or found abandoned on the streets. Yes, even in Nevada County. Their chances of finding a home are slim, as everyone, understandably, wants a young healthy animal. These animals often actually are healthy, or maybe need a inexpensive daily dose of meds (don't you?).
A man and his wife came into the shelter a few weeks ago, and selected a large overweight 12 year old German Shepard. I had to ask. "Why that dog?" There are so many to choose from." The man said, "A few months ago my dog passed on at 12. Had him since a pup. I'm not ready to make that 12 year commitment just yet, but surely I can share a few years with this guy." Doesn't that make you want to cry?
So, maybe you would like to have a pet, but for whatever reasons can't make that long term commitment. What about sharing the next 5 years with a wonderful deserving little soul who lost their family thru no fault of their own?
November is "adopt a senior" month. Please consider. Is there some floor space in your warm comfy home for a little dog or kitty bed? Room in the cupboard for a few cans and bag of food? Room in your heart for a new loving friend?
A month ago my so very beloved Doxie, the famous Harry T. Dog passed away in my arms quite unexpectedly. He just turned 16 in August. He has been part of the family for 14 1/2 years. I think the last 6 years were his sweetest (he was actually wonderfully evil the first 10. He wasn't known as "the little bastard" for nothin'). God Bless and please care of the little man till I get there.
Anyway, think about it, and please pass on that story. Thank you for reading.

Been gone for a week, returned on Sunday, which was really Rainday. Boy, did it pour! I actually came back from the Bay Area on the #6 California Zephyr Amtrak Train, Emeryville to Colfax, in 3 hours. What a great ride. It's so interesting to see the back side of the towns you usually breeze by on Hwy 80. The train was nearly empty, so I grabbed a window seat on the east side (I know the Bay Views by heart) to see the seldom seen side. I find the back yards, rear of businesses, wrecking yards and hobo (homeless?) camps interesting. Then we traversed the farmlands of Suisun, Fairfield and Vacaville, on into Sacramento. In Sac, we picked up a gentleman from the Railroad Museum who then narrated the rest of the trip. Lots of factoids on the founding of the various towns between Sac and Truckee, where the rock for the bridges was mined, and populations in the heyday. It was great. I put my book away and just took in the ambiance. Trains are such a relaxing friendly way to travel. Unlike planes, children run up and down the aisles, people visit about their destinations, and share travel tips. Everyone seemed more than willing to help another passenger, or chat. I'm thinking I will take Amtrak to visit my friend in San Clemente this winter. Only 12 hours from Emeryville to LA. Why not, I've got the time! The bonus is that is was cheaper than the tank of gas it would have taken for Phil to come and get me. Love it.

The womens club is going to staff the firehouse onto Banner Hill for the Nov. 2 election. If you forget to mail your ballot in time, you can always drop it off at that firehouse, and save yourself a trip to Rood center. The money they earn goes to the CSWC to pay for their wonderful events, like the Halloween party this weekend. Bring your little gremlin/monster/princess down Sat. for games, treats and gift bags. It's always a fun social event, with lots of nutritious snacks for kids and parent. Bring a snack to share if you wish!

I'm still fostering Rocky the wonder chihuahua, which we have nicknamed "Rocco." He is a sweet 10 year old Chi/Pug mix, looking for a forever home. If you love and understand Chi's, or know someone who does, he would make an excellent companion. They are quirky silly little dogs. Loves to love, needs little exercise, travels well, and is crate trained. He really is sweet to "his person" though a little wary of others. He gives me lots of kisses, and is a great car companion too. Not a barker, likes kitties. You can find his picture on Petfinder. And if you ask Dixie, do not believe her when she tells you he is a nasty little fruit-bat. To know him is to love him.

The rain Sunday caused a small landslide at the corner of Summit Ridge and BQH Rd. Roads sure were quick to clean it up. I guess that's because of all the resurfacing going on down BQH Rd. Sure are lots of bigggggg trucks traveling up and down the big hill lately. Any idea when it will end? Your recovery $$$$ at work I guess.

Paving Pasquale

Lots of paving going on here in the shores. Saw new blacktop on BQ Hill by store. If you go out Pasquale about a mile it starts again. Looks like we'll have a nice clean slate for the winter! Pasquale is sure shaping up. New turnouts, treed out to let the sun in to melt ice/snow. There are still wood rounds ripe for the picking. You can slice them and make nice pavers.

What a beautiful fall. Our reward for virtually no spring! I drove to south grass valley this am, and returned via Pasquale, which must be one of the most beautiful roads in all of Nevada County. People get so used to zooming up and down the hill, I think they forget what a treat it is to meander along that road, with the beautiful Madrona forests and glimpses of both upper and lower Scotts Flat. If you never have, you really should walk or bike that road sometime. Each turn reveals another beautiful glimpse of the forest and lake views. So I was inspired:

The abundant gold of the Oaks all around you
Madrona framing they sky, oh so pretty

The womens club has been very busy with fun projects, classes, meetings. The other night was dinner and pizza at Sharon Hogans house. Mary Mahoney is going to teach a job workshop at the Firehouse (check website for dates). Manuela is planning sewing classes at the Firehouse on Saturdays, and if that does work, on a weekday. This is such a great community. I love the way people help people, and want to share their talent and knowledge.

Did you know Surburban Propane is moving their facility from Nev. City Highway in Brunswick Basin to Loma Rica across from the airport? I think they will be moved by Oct. 30th. So you'll be driving out there to fill those portable tanks or pay the tab. That area just has everything now! There's a recycle center, Restore to drop off your no-longer-needed but still usable household/building items, propane, a Harley mechanic, oh-yeah, and Cooler Zone who happens to have have the coffee K-cups for my Keurig Coffee Maker. They have a really good selection of them too. Gotta love all the one stop shopping areas in Nevada County. It makes doing errands soooo easy. There's even a good deli out there if errand running makes you hungry.

Amgen Tour 2011/Opossum Trial

It was announced that Lake Tahoe will host the Amgen Tour 2011. Nevada City was hoping for a repeat, but I guess they are spreading the wealth. Oh well, we did it up right in 2010!

Don't know if you've heard of the Carter Livingston case. He is a 19 year old from LOP that hacked a opossum to death (44 chops) in front of 4 onlookers, and it was so entertaining, he posted it on youtube. I went to courthouse today to show support for Humane Treatment of Animals, to sit in on his hearing. About 50 others showed up to do the same. Carter's hearing was postponed till 10/28. We need to send a loud and clear message that animal cruelty will not be tolerated. If you agree, send a note to Deputy Dist. Attorney Katherine Francis asking a maximum penalty for this felony crime.

Gotta Brag here

If you're not a baseball fan, this means nothing. I am, so this is cool. My friend Ron bought tickets to last Sunday's Giants game like 6 months ago when the season first went on sale. So who knew they were going to have a killer season. So, last Sunday, he and I were sitting in row 8, 3rd base when the fabulous San Francisco Giants clinched the Natl League West against the Padres in a TOUGH 3 game series. They lost the first 2 games, but he final score was 3/0 Sunday, and the Padres never got a man past 2nd base. Whew! What a nail biter. AT&T was packed, everyone waiving orange towels, the fanship was amazing and it was a beautiful San Francisco Day.

A few years ago the Homeowners put together a CERT class at the Firehouse. If you wanted to join, you were trained to be a First Responder, and learned first aid, mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, artificial respiration, and some other techniques. They also just taught us how to stay calm in the face of emergency, which is definitely easier when you know what to do. Well, on the way home from the Giants game, in an absolutely packed Bart car, the young woman standing right in front of Ron and I fainted right into Ron, then began having Grand Mal seizures in rapid succession. Thanks to that wonderful class I took, I was able to take care of her for the full 20 minutes before the para-medics arrived. It felt really good when I easily remembered exactly what to do, and all ended well. Thank you CSHA for making that possible for me, and for the woman. I actually have had 3 medical emergency's thrown at me since I took that class. Maybe they can put it together again.

A very nice woman called me last week about the Firehouse Book exchange. She was worried about the books getting wet if it rained, so offered to throw a tarp over the case. She also said she sometimes took the junky books to her home recycle bin. I started the book exchange 5 years ago, but certainly don't need to be the one to maintain it. I totally appreciate any and all that want to do maintenance, removal of the junk, etc. It is YOUR book exchange. When the real rain comes, most of the books are moved inside the building for the winter, and I keep only the top drawer of the metal cabinet accessible (the bottom drawers can get wet when the snow piles up). Please enjoy, and any helping hand maintaining it you can offer is appreciated.

Got room for a sweet old dog?

No, I'm not trying to farm out the husband. There is a lovely blond 10-13 year old cocker spaniel at Nevada County shelter, dropped off by his owner who wanted to travel, and was hindered by her dog's simple needs. He is very scared and shaking at the activity of the shelter, and just needs a comfy place to rest his bones and mind. He is sweet, obedient and totally healthy. Can you or anyone you know help Piccolo out? Please call the shelter if you can. Thanks for passing this info on.

Feeling the heat? It has been actually beautiful here in the shores during this heat spell. At least 10 degrees cooler than town. Love my trees. Went to LML today, and it was serene and beautiful. If only the days stayed long and light like summer. Fall is so beautiful here though, and the leaves are changing to yellow and my Chinese lantern plant is gloriously in bloom with it's beautiful orange lantern.s. Anyone want some for table decorations? Come by! I'll gladly share.

Speaking of fostering dogs, my latest is really a pistol. I have a 10 year old Chihuahua named Rocky. He is 7 lbs of love mixed with attitude. Quite the independent soul. He had his medical problem when he arrived a month ago, but with the help of Motherlode Vet Dr. Tim, Rock Man is feeling much better, and I think he's ready for a home. He needs little space or exercise, loves cars and kids (if they are careful and don't try to pick him up) and has a lot of life left to live. Italian Festival this weekend

Phil (the better half) is from Melrose Park, Illinois, which is 20 minutes from Chicago. He's half Italian, half Polish (hold the jokes.) Melrose Park is a small, mostly Italian suburb of Chi Town, where you can drive down any street with a local, and they will point out a house where some mobster grew up. There's Joey Aiuppia's house, he finally got pinched for skimming from a casino. Or, Anthony Arcardo lived there, he was the "BIG BOSS." So, when we go back to see the family, we're always passed from Italian aunt and uncle to cousins, ect, "come for dinnah, we'll throw togetha a little sumpthin." Which means fabulous traditional pasta, gravy, hot and mild sausage, peppers and onions, eggplant, homemade this, homemade that, some huge selection of desserts and lots of brand x wine and coffee. Sleep it off, and do it again tomorrow at another relatives house. ANYHOO, can't wait to go to the FIRST Italian Festival at the Fairgrounds this weekend. Not only will there be GREAT Italian food from all over the county, (which I will be comparing to the "real thing") a real live Dean Martin impersonator, (I can't resist impersonators) funny chefs, a strolling accordion player, dancing and bocci ball. Too fun. It will be like a trip Chicago, without the lost luggage and storm delays! Yay!
By the way, last time I was in Melrose I found out what WOP means (a derogatory word for Italian American) In the Ellis Island immigration days, it meant With Out Papers. Tee hee.
